    It's a concept in daoism. Surely there are elements of what you describe within it - dao is described as being like many streams flowing into a greater river - but it's also an individualistic concept. The uncarved block is our selves unweighed by the contrivances of the world, when we don't let things outside us control who we are. It is the self that accepts their wants and needs and is authentic.

    At least, that is my understanding.

    What I do know is, I have a bad habit of carving my block and letting it be carved. That is why I make such an effort to remember.
