walking Bass
Grew up listening to classical until I heard Muddy Water's Greatest Hits. Changed from guitar to bass at 16 and have had 12 bars (some with scotch) in my soul my entire life. Among the high points was jamming with Lazy Bill Lucas after he relocated from Chicago to Minneapolis in the mid-60's. He'd played on many of the Chess recordings as the session pianist and was as remarkable for his joy in making music as the quality of his playing. John "Papa John" Kolstad played a tremendous 12-string rounding out our trio.
Tina Turner sitting in with a soul bar band for a song was pretty special too.
My favorite ensemble was a trio - Medium Rare - featuring Jim Matteson on drums and Dean Granros on guitar. Both were good singers and great players. We played the old Scholar Cafe for a memorable evening. Both are still playing - Dean has released jazz albums - the most recent in 2022.
An eight piece with horns was also great fun - nothing like hearing the horns come in on "Uptight" - always made everything Alright!
