1967 GIBSON EB3 BASS

I wonder if anyone can advise. I was checking out a 1967 Gibson EB3 (cherry red) today and it sounds great. It's for sale in a well know UK classic guitar shop and it plays and sounds great, but two things worry me. The condition is just too good for the year, with only a very few tiny marks, and it has no serial number stamped on the back of the head. The sale ticket says the number is 032859 but the sales people don't know where that information came from because it's not visible anywhere on the bass.

I can see that the knobs have been replaced because there are two different types of silver ones and one gold. So this suggests age.

Its just short of £3,000 but if it's fake then no matter how good it sounds it's not worth the money.

Can anyone advise please?

My 60’s EB3 had the serial number stamped on the back of the head stock.

For better advice a picture would be useful.

Ok, a couple of things about EB3. The neck and head stock are know to break. Especially the 34” scale version with the slotted headstock. Make sure this has not been repaired.

Make sure the rotory selector is functioning. Position 1 should be mud. The other three should be different shades of not a lot of bass. Finally, make sure the truss Rod is adjustable.

Best wishes.

You got plenty of good advice - along with a ton of humour - in the other thread. I'm not quite sure what kind of new information are you looking for with this one.

I wouldn't take a Gibson without a serial number for free, let alone at their asking price.

Your money your call.
Thanks, I think you summed it up. Without the serial number I can't justify the price, no matter how it sounds. I will look elsewhere.

This is what the thread is about...
