I recently bought a really nice Squier CV Mustang from another TB'er. It's a fantastic instrument, but I have an odd problem with it (at least odd to me). It was picking up a ground hum - the kind that goes away when you touch the strings or bridge. None of my other basses do this with the same cables, outlets, amps, etc. I tried swapping cables and all the usual suspects. Nothing made it go away, so I took it my tech. He works on it and tells me he can't find anything - it sounds fine to him through multiple amps.
I pick up and take it practice, plug it into my loud rig at my buddies house, and low and behold......no hum. It sounds great. Fast forward to today, I hook it up amp #1 in my practice room and it's fine. I hook it up to amp #2, there is the hum again. So at this point, I swap outlets between the two amps. It only hums on the old tube amp (which was recently serviced and has a proper grounded plug).
At this point I just hook up to the newer solid state amp, and the hum is again gone. This is where it gets weird. I walk over the where my laptop and stereo is to put on music to play to, when I get withing a foot or two of the laptop - boom the hum comes back. I walk away, the hum goes away. It's worth noting that I'm often sitting in front of the laptop and stereo queuing up songs, which could be why it was always humming for me at home until today when I was practicing standing and was across the room.
My precision basses don't have this issue with the identical setup.
So what do you think? Shielding maybe? Could my laptop or crappy stereo amp be putting out a bunch of interference?
Thanks in advance.
