These replaced a broken set of DiMarzio Area P pickups in a custom P-bass. First off, it does sound like a P-bass, but in some way it just comes off weaker and more frail than the Area P did. Even compensating for output (turning up gain and raising pickups), they still don't have a hard gut punch or bite like you get from the Area P's. I'm using GHS Precision Flats, so the thump should be there in droves like with the Area P.
I got these because I was in a pinch and figured they'd sound good, but where the Area P's made me go "WOW! This bass sounds great!", these pickups just make me go "Oh, it makes sound...cool..."
If you want a SUPER mellow (not big and round, mellow) P pickup for a lower price, this is a good option for you. There are so many others out there, I would strongly suggest picking another one for a bit more money. Custom Shop '62 is more pricey, but could be a better pickup overall. This really reminds me of an OEM pickup, not an aftermarket one you'd place in bass to really jazz it up.
