    In praise of solid colors

There's just something sleek and futuristic about a bass in a single, solid color, with black hardware and no pickguard. To me, there's always been an aesthetic difference between "guitar as furniture" - hence the rise of coffee table basses with exotic wood sandwiches and transparent finishes...

Satin finishes, do you like them?

We can see more and more satin finishes in recent years, probably because they cost less to produce. But the question is: do you like them?

[Poll] Who is truly interested in a 70s Precision reissue?

My recent NBD post really got me thinking. If Fender were to make an accurate late 60s / early 70s Precision Bass reissue with the correct overall specs, period accurate finishes, and U.S. made, Who would be interested in picking one up? I have posted about this very topic multiple times, it...

Colorful Fretless Basses? (Under 1000 preferably)

My girlfriend has been wanting to learn bass so I want to get her a nice bass to learn on, she's particularly interested in fretless basses but almost all fretless basses seem to be in boring colors like sunburst, black, plain white, ect. She would want something brighter even the classic fender...

what finish looks ‘as natural as possible’?

me and my dad talked about the possibility in the bit distant future to build a bass from scratch (a rickenbacker... don’t tell john hall!) using wood from his lumber yard of choice which he says DOES have bubinga. he’s a luthier, but mainly does guitars so he said he’ll need to buy bass...

    what finish is on there?

yes yes yes!!! i know this is a guitar, i’m not blind, but i’m just interested in the finish. nitro??? i don’t see it being glossy, and i doubt its poly either. i’m surprised i couldn’t find an answer on any other various guitar forum so i’m afraid i’ll have to do a more hands-on approach to get...

best oil finish for all around durability and protection?

i mean that’s the point of a finish right? tell me the best oil to use when finishing wood to get both a cool natural look (maybe a hint of shine) and also be able to protect my bass from the elements, whatever they may be.

    Matte Bass Finish

Hope you all are having a great Sunday. I’m posting because I recently took one of my instruments to a luthier and whatever he used to clean it with, left white residue spots. This bass has a unique rough matte finish and I wanted to ask you guys how to get these white cloudy patches off and...

Lacquer over oil based gel stain ok?

I'm in Florida and just put an oil based Old Masters red mahogany gel stain on a bass body. I'd like to avoid poly and use an aerosol gloss lacquer clear coat as I'm in a high humidity area and the thin coats and fast dry time sounds good. That said I've googled and can't seem to find a...
