So I just picked up a used Warwick Fortress One from 1995. After taking the strings off and cleaning the fretboard, I noticed at least one of the frets is lifting a bit. Is this major? Does it ruin the bass?
Hey Talkbass, I'm finding that with many guitars I have to dress the fret ends for a more comfortable playing profile. The way I rest and slide my fingers along fretboard edge catches on steeper bevel edges.
I've attached some pics where I've dressed the fret ends on right side (G string edge)...
I'm considering getting another fretless similar to one of my fretteds, and was wondering how much weight frets add to a 24 fret neck, so I can get an idea if it will be lighter.
Thanks.
I have some frets that are lifting. They're often partially lifting in the middle or at one end. But they don't seem to move when you try to press them down. I've tried hammering them with a fret hammer and that doesn't seem to do anything either. On a different bass with the same issue, I tried...
Hello,
I’m just a tad OCD when it comes to my basses and I was wondering if anyone could tell me whether this is a sign of the frets sprouting? Not sure if fret sprout is the correct term here (I’m not referring to the edges of the frets), but what I mean is that some of the frets don’t look...
I’ve owned my short scale stingray for just over 3 years. I play almost everyday and it is the only bass I own. I was surprised to see fret wear already. tHow long do frets typically last before wear becomes and issue?
I believe these are nickle frets. Of course I use stainless strings (DR high...
Any help on this would be most appreciated
I play stainless steel elites and have done for many years. What I do notice is that Stainless Steel strings knock the poopie out of my nickel frets on my fenders (not to extensive) but still enough to warrant a fret dress every now and then.
Im going...
Hello everybody. I bought a really nice used American standard Fender Dimension V.
I have a strange neck and fretboard problem. The first problem is that even though the bridge is down, the G string is still high on the neck and vibrates from 8 onwards. So the luthier decided to rectify the...
So I got huge issues with my Warwick Bass.
Warwick RockBass Corvette Multiscale, 5-String - Solid Black Satin | W-Music Distribution
I think it's the first Warwick to have fan frets and it kinda shows.
When I got it I wasn't able to get the intonation on the G and D String right. They would...
Pretty much all the frets passed the 12th are useless on my pj bass. Was wondering what the average cost of fret leveling is. I know how much it costs on the high end but how much have you spent? Please dont give me setup advice. That is not the problem. The frets need re-leveling
Hi Bass brothers.
I Bought my first music man style bass recently. The Sterling SUB 4 version. Have to say, I am quite impressed with the playability and sound thru the amp. However, there is one issue I can’t fix and it a clincher. When playing fast or aggressive around fret 3 & 4 there is a...
I fixed the fret sprout on my P bass a few months ago when humidity was still in the 30s. Now we average 75% and the neck has expanded beyond the frets, which are now shorter than the wood. So now when I play I can feel the indentations under my fingers.
I guess the wood hasn't been dried...
you usually see vintage fender basses with those skinny little 6230 frets, but whenever you see a vintage fender that says “original frets” in the listing... they’re big and fat! i’ve used my obviously genius deduction skills (also known as looking at pictures) to come to the conclusion that...
I’m chasing this p bass w/flats tone, and can’t seem to coax it. I’m thinking it’s got to be a technique, set up, or a strings thing? I’m after this grippy, rippy, crunch from the frets like in this video .
The gear I have to work with is a Squier CV 70’s p, currently strung with well broken in...
On my 2002 Lakland Skyline JO four string, my G string buzzes on the 7th fret only when the E string is fretted as well.
I noticed this when running up the G scale with added thirds and it doesn’t happen anywhere else on the neck. Only the 7th fret D on the G string when the E string is also...
i said in that old pat vegas thread i made towards the beginning of month that it looked like he had put jumbo frets on his bass, but i had considered it then, and now think it’s true currently, that maybe fender just put really big frets on their 50s p basses. go and look up “1951 fender...
i don’t know what to tell you other than those frets look MASSIVE for a 1956 p bass, or really any bass in the 50s, 60s, or 70s. i know he modded the crap out of it though so there’s a possibility that those aren’t very standard frets.
More than once in the forum I’ve noticed someone comment on how they hate a bass with 24 frets.
I have basses with 21, 22 & 24 frets. Usually, I find myself missing the extra frets on my basses with fewer, not the other way around.
What gives?
So, I have quite a few basses but as of yet, I don't have a single fretless. In fact, as I think about it, I'm not positive that at any point in history I've ever played a fretless. But I feel the need to add one to my collection because... well, it's nice to have options. I keep hearing people...
I realize that not everything you read on the internet is true so I'm trying to separate fact from fiction here. I have encountered a statement multiple times that contradicts something that I'm seeing with my own two eyes and it is this.. "You can't swap out that neck with that other neck...
I have a bass that I would like to convert from a 20 to 22 fret instrument. I already have an idea in my head as to what I need to do, but my question is, how do I figure out where to put the bridge? I know there are fret placement calculators but i havent seen/heard of a bridge placement...
Getting straight to it, I have a Fender AM Professional 5 string P bass and I love it BUT there are three frets, yes just 3 that enoy the hell out of me.
The frets are the 2'nd to the 4'th on the G string ( A, Bb, B ) that buzz, not in a nice way with roundwound strings.
I have gotten good...
Hey guyz,
would you say these are damaged?..Played this 83' P for many yrs using GHS bass boomers, the size of brooklyn bridge cables..you know the ones:smug:...There is no buzzing and it still sounds and plays beautifully. These flat spots stop at the 4th-5th fret..I really hate fixing what...
Announced this week at NAMM, the Ibanez Pia is predecessor to Steve Vai's Jem. The Pia sports stainless frets.
Eddie Van Halen's Wolfgang also sports stainless frets.
Music Man is going stainless with many of their guitars and basses.
The world's coming around and seeing the light. :smug:
Every fret from 1 to 9 in first - second strings area. Is it normal for totally new, made in 2019, unplayed by me bass? I have 5 more guitars and non of them have this...
Is fret spacing much different in 35" basses comparing to 34"? Is this easier to play 34" basses than 35"? I do have 35" bass. It is great in all aspects. I also have an avg hand size. It is a bit hard for my hand to play this bass. Will 34" inch bass make much of difference?
Asking more...
So, as everybody knows the bass guitar has seen a fair share of evolution since it's inception only upwards of seventy years ago. In recent years, with the seven-strings arriving, some basses now possess a range almost equal to that of a piano, an impressive feat.
Now I'm asking - how much...
I play in an all-originals local band, (we pretty much only do showcase shows, if that matters?). I joined the band last summer, and I have been using a fretless bass as my main bass for about 7 years now, which is all well and good as the BL prefers I play the fretless. But I’m only human, and...
Hand-built US Rick Turner Renaissance Fretted 5-string bass.
Lightweight (6.5 lbs, per the bathroom scale) chambered Black Acacia body with a satin finish.
Graphite-reinforced maple neck has 21 frets (rare; these basses are usually fretless), and a sleek feel. The piezo pickup and active...

Don't post much, but I've noticed some level of disdain for 24-fret basses, not just on this forum. What's the problem here? Is it not objectively better to have more frets to work with, why the hate for 24-frets, you can objectively do less with 20 frets
I have a '64 jazz I've been playing for 40 years at least. It was Joe O's backup ax but he never needed it. It fell off a stand and dinged the third fret. I tried crowning and all that, and it looks like replacement of the one fret is my best course of action. I've been looking for information...
Hi guys & gals,
As in the title: who makes an 18mm spaced 6 string bass with stainless steel frets? The only other requirement is that is must not have a zero fret......
Maybe a Carvin / Kiesel? I can't think of any others......
Many thanks in advance.
I recently got my bass' action adjusted (lowered), and after I got it back i got severe fret buzz on the first two frets of each string, but every other fret doesn't buzz at all. I have the action where i want it, do i need to adjust the Truss Rod? And how would i do it?
