My version of What's Going On (James Jamerson)

A bit intimidating to post this to a bunch of bass players, but here goes. My take on Jamerson's masterpiece. I am not playing the bass line note for note the entire song, but I think I got close enough. Got the transcription from Standing In The Shadows by Dr. Licks. The bass was an '85...

Getting that gritty Nick Campbell tone

How does one get the type of grit that Nick Campbell gets with both his Musicmaster at 5:03 and his P bass at 6:32? To me it sounds like distortion from a tape machine, like Jamerson? Maybe it;s his compressor pedal? I think he uses a Cali76.

What songs hit you as "bass" songs, and which don't?

I play guitar and bass, so in certain songs I am drawn to one or the other in the mix. In Stax stuff, I always hear Cropper—not Dunn (sacrilege, I know). Conversely, in most of Stevie Wonder's stuff I only hear Jamerson, Babbitt, or Watts—not so much the other musicians. Anyone else experience...

I've got these LaBella Jamersons that I've finally managed to setup nicely at low-medium action on my P-Bass. I recently returned to bass playing after a long hiatus (15+ years), and I’m just now learning that this Motown player named James Jamerson is being widely recognized as one of the greatest electric bassists, and rightly so. The only thing is, back when I regrettably put my bass down at the...

This past weekend, I became obsessed with mastering Midnight Train to Georgia. So I’ve done a lot of messing around with foam mutes stuffed under the strings on my Precision. Jamerson on Can't Get Next to You

A great, dynamic tune from the 70's was "Can't Get Next to You" by the Temptations: Here's Jamerson's isolated track. Sounds competent, not particularly remarkable. But listen to him within the fully-mixed song - it's sheer mastery! He had such a great ear for what the song needed and an...
