10 vs 15 vs 12: Does bass speaker size matter?

This is really interesting and very well executed:

Except for slap, I love the 15 (my rig is 1x15+2x10 indeed).

the cabinets are different, so any differences in sound can't only be attributed to the diameter of the speaker. the video just shows how the cabinet/speaker combination sound relative to each other. don't buy a cabinet based on speaker size, you buy it based on the tone and volume/power handling you require regardless of speaker size.

I liked 'em all and would play with any of them. But if I had to pick one, I'd stick with 212 or a pair of 112s. If I had to pick between the 15 and the 10s, I'd take the 15. I like the nice thumpy sound. Actually, I liked all of them as I said... so it's just a matter of me liking one a little more.

However, the results are so close together that no one would notice in a live show.

I find that it's all about the design and tuning of the cab; what's inside is almost meaningless to me. :)

And as stated above, live, no appreciable difference.
I disagree with the “it doesn’t matter live” take. I certainly appreciate the difference, as do my bandmates — and this results in a difference in how we play. And the audience appreciates that.

But the re is something about number of compliments I get on the tone of my rig that tells me the audience does appreciate the tone of the cabinets. And it’s a tone I’ve never gotten with tens or twelves.

So, IME, it’s appreciable.

Because there's >1 variable in that comparison, concluding that whatever differences are detected are due to driver size does not hold logical water. It's a fun comparison that doesn't actually mean much.

Exactly. Tons of factors change the sound of a speaker (and I'm talking about the speaker alone, not how it interacts with the cab). The only factor that is easily visible is the size (nominal diameter) of the speaker, so that's the one that most people focus on.

12's have always been my go-to speakers, either 112 or 212 cabs.
I have two 4x12s that sound completely different.

One I have to tame the bottom end, and one I add some.

They still sound different, both great to me, but someone could easily like one and not the other.

The math ain't mathin' here. :)

of the many many factors that affect the performance / sound of a bass cab, the diameter of the speaker in and of itself is the least important / has the least impact. different cabs sound different. you can get a cab with 10s and one with 15(s) tuned to sound very similar. and you can get different cabs with the same speaker diameter to sound very different.

Ampeg currently have four 15 cabs in their line up, each one sounds, and performs different.
MarkBass also have a few different 15's, they sound different from others in their line, as well as from the Ampegs mentioned above.

Then throw in an SWR 15, the GK Neo 15, a Mesa Subway 15 and a Peavey Black Widow 15 and we got all kinds of different 15 sounds and performances.

Which one is the "true" 15? :help:

It's also close miking the woofers on cabinets including horns which may not have the same crossover points.
