It was two months ago I found a '61 Fender Jazz at an estate sale, here's my previous thread:
I Think I Just Bought A '62 Jazz?!
I just got it back from my luthier yesterday, big thanks to Koontz Guitar Repair in Detroit, MI for doing the dirty work. I just completed more detailing (mostly setup, additional foam under the pickups, installing the bridge cover) and wanted to share the finished product. Here's a list of all the repairs that were completed on this Pre-CBS classic:
What a neck! Hardly any relief, E string height set at 3/64" there is very minimal fret buzz. Easiest playing bass I've ever played and I've played a lot of them over the years! Sounds pretty good too!

I just completed more detailing (mostly setup, additional foam under the pickups, installing the bridge cover) and wanted to share the finished product. Here's a list of all the repairs that were completed on this Pre-CBS classic:
- Fill crack in neck/headstock with heavy duty epoxy and finish over (luthier wasn't able to clamp it)
- Install new unbleached bone nut
- Reroute pickup and control cavity due to excessive finish buildup which didn't allow the pickups to move
- New pickup foam
- New CTS pots, output jack, orange drop capacitor, and replaced aftermarket steel braided wiring with cloth covered wiring
- Replace aftermarket knobs and slotted pickguard/thumbrest screws with period correct aged parts
- Completely refinish headstock due to poor sanding job by previous owner and apply new period correct decal, clearcoat applied over decal for preservation purposes
- Lubricate all tuners and fix loose paddle on A tuner
- Install aged bridge cover
- Install period correct headstock strap button
