1st Bass Build :D : P/J Rising...

After a few weeks of germination, I finally pulled the trigger on the neck & body for my first bass build today after selling ~3/4 of their cost in old pickups & pedals this week.

I landed on a 32" scale Warhead neck in maple/maple w/ black block inlays & SS6230 frets (it'll get a bone nut from my luthier friend) paired up w/ a 3lb. 14 oz. roasted alder short scale P-Bass body w/ a 7/8" side jack rout for an Electrosocket & a '70s repositioned Jazz pickup rout, both unfinished from the Warmoth showcase:

Here's what I managed to get setup to start working on a mockup so far, not sure if the relative scaling is exactly right on the neck yet or not & I have no idea on the absolute measurement of either at this point so it'll be of limited use to me until I have the bits in hand to confirm, but it helps to get the ideas going any way :):

I'm thinking I'll go for semi-80s G&L-esque shape on the headstock & am planning to mockup a bit of a mod for the beveled .09" thick white gloss one ply guard I ordered that cuts off the lower horn carrying the curve of the control section to the high side of the neck pocket.

I'll also likely come up w/ a decal design for the headstock as blank ones usually look unfinished for me & it's usually one of the more fun parts of the build process for me :)

The plan at the moment is to finish the body w/ the color matched from my car (Rising Blue Metallic) over a grey primer, maybe try some of the Duplicolor Clear Effex to make it a bit more interesting in the light, & clear gloss nitro lacquer for the finish. Here's a couple of shots of the color on my car & someone else's under less direct lighting w/ a darker reflection:

The car has a much lighter primer than I'm thinking I'll use on the bass at this point, but we'll see how it works out when I get the stuff in & do some sample runs on some cherry veneer swatches.

The neck I'm planning to sand to 600 grit & go pretty thin (somewhere around 6-8 coats) w/ StewMac satin lacquer maybe mixing a couple passes of extremely light dusting w/ their aged clear if it's looking too stark white to me after the first couple coats of clear, then rub to a frictionless smooth feel w/ a white 3M pad. This produced one of the best feeling nitro finished necks I've got for me on the last guitar build I finished.

My luthier friend is going to order up the hardware for me direct from Hipshot on Monday: a B style FM2 model bridge in brass, a set of the 1/2" Ultralites w/ lollipop keys, & one of their string retainers (all chrome plated):

For the electronics I'm planning on the Geezer P/J set from EMG unless anyone has some good recommendations for a better set for old school sounding, healthy but not crazy output P/Js.

Thanks for taking a look!

I used the purple. It's dope. But, the blues look promising.

Nice. I am doing a first time build myself. The Swamp Ash body arrived today. P bass from Warmoth.
I too am looking at the Geezer Butler EMGs and a Fender J bass neck from Fender.
I have a J already and like the neck diameter. I'm looking at a stained finish to highlight the grain black hardware and pick guard.
This is a great reference site.
Good luck in your build

After much delay, I got most of the bits together for this one over the past couple months, started putting stuff together over the past couple weekends & got my luthier friend to make a bone nut for it today.

Here's some pics of where it's at so far:

Aside from needing to do some embiggening of the tuner post holes, everything went together very smoothly & it's feeling & sounding great so far w/ a set of Pure Blues .105-.045 (I'm thinking it might get TI flats in the end, but didn't want to burn a set of them until I'm done taking it apart/putting it back together frequently). I'm pretty impressed w/ the detail, clarity, lack of noise, & general tonal possibilities of the Geezer set in here.

Still need to decide what exactly what I want to do w/ the headstock shape & decal & I'm having some thoughts of maybe doing either a black tint w/ clear finish or even just a really light tru-oil treatment sans tinting on the body instead of the Rising Blue that was the initial plan. So far I'm really liking it functionally at any rate :)

Your purple bass is beautiful.

To me it seems the finish OP wants would be more easily achieved with a spray finish of some kind. With staining, you get more of the wood grain in the end result, and more of a "transparent" effect on the finish, like your purple P, no?

Don't get me wrong, your bass is gorgeous. Just curious why you suggested it, beyond personal preference, for the type of finish OP gave an example of. I am by no means an expert on finishing, I merely dabble, so just looking for the insight behind it.

Did some work on mockups of the headstock & guard shapes. I think I'm pretty happy w/ the headstock shape, not 100% sure on the guard though...

Hopefully I'll get started on the headstock shaping this weekend. I'm thinking I'll likely do some contouring on the back of the high side heel area of the body if I can dig up a palm sander too.

Got the headstock shaped, did a bit contouring of the neck pocket area on the body, put everything back together & tested out a paper template of my pickguard shape over the past week. (Crappy cellphone) Pics below:

Think I'm going to audible to the "natural +"/aged clear finish for the body & a black guard w/ some chrome CLF knobs after seeing the guard shape in black on the bass. Hopefully I can get myself to doing the finish over the next couple weekends.

Made pretty good progress on the finish the past couple days.

Started w/ 3 coats of sanding sealer on the body & a couple on the neck then gave the body a pretty good sanding w/ 320. Followed up w/ a couple passes of Aged Clear immediately followed by satin clear while still wet & a couple more coats of just satin:

I put 2 passes of aged clear+satin clear on the neck but wound up w/ some pooling & runs on the headstock since it seems to be going on a bit thinner than I'm used to & I've had to let it dry vertically. Wound up sanding back the headstock & get it back to parity w/ the rest of the neck & will likely stop after 3 more coats of satin clear on the whole neck.

Also got a set of TI JF324s for it for when I'm ready to put it back together for the "final" time:

I got the rest of the finish on the neck on Saturday night & had the body done as well before I noticed later in the night that something must have bumped into it while it was hanging leaving 2 good sized booboos in the finish of the top :rage::banghead: Happily they weren't deep enough to get down to the toner coats & after some fairly significant sanding Sunday afternoon & laying down 2 replacement coats of clear on the top I think the ding areas will be nigh on invisible after the repairs. I wound up deciding to lay another 3 coats on the whole body for a total of 10 so I had a bit more finish to work w/ when I'm ready for the sanding & polishing.

Here's the top w/ my paper template for the modded guard shape laying on it this afternoon:

I had ordered a thick one-ply matte black guard from Warmoth last week that's slated to arrive some time tomorrow & hopefully I should be able mod it on Friday & go forth w/ the sanding & polishing of neck & body & the reassembly on Saturday/Sunday.

I still haven't been able to land on a decal design that I'm super enthused about yet. I think this is the most likely candidate so far:

At least it's a fairly simple task to add the decal later on if I don't have something I want to commit to for a bit.

I might suggest curving the lettering to match your headstock lower curve as potentially more pleasing. ...Or not, your call.

It's starting to feel like UPS lost my black guard from Warmoth :( It was slated for delivery yesterday but transitioned back to In Transit today & detail has had it sitting in Hodgkins, IL since Saturday w/ no other update... Guess I'll need to get in touch w/ Warmoth if there's no movement on it today.

I could cut one from scratch from bakelite I have on hand, but kinda like the thickness & deep bevel of the one I ordered & was hoping to avoid cutting the time consuming & high PITA factor hole for the P pickup.
