Or I'm just having trouble applying it to something I was testing out. The coupon field wasn't enabled.
It seems to only work for 'in stock' items. For example, i tried in on the fender american elite jazz bass on musicians friend store, the code worked on the natural finish, which is in stock, but not on other finishes which are back-ordered.

Worked for me last night. I damn near stole a bass that was already priced very low and the 20% off couple just made it unrealistic for me not to buy it.
just fyi, the promethean 300h with the ebay code is $320, without the code at sam ash it's $300. investigate before purchase for possible savings elsewhere.
