A friend of mine acquired an Ampeg 210 cabinet—looks like a Portabass IIRC—rated 400 watts from a pawn shop, but discovered it was loaded with car stereo speakers. He made an offer of $50 just for the cab, but is wondering what to load it with (we're in our 50s, gig). I told him I'd ask here ;)

I have a late '90s EV 210 cab that gets the job done for me, but he's a bit more tone conscious than I am (ish), as I tend to go DI and use my cab more for on-stage monitoring. I'd also consider weight...

Thanks!

Portabass, or portaflex? You have 3 options really, each more involved than the other.

Option 1... you buy whatever speakers you want. Maybe it will sound amazing, maybe it will sound like garbage.

Option 2... you contact Ampeg for information on what drivers may work well, or if they have replacements to drop in.

Option 3... you find the internal volume of the cab and it's associated characteristics (ported/sealed) and input the specs into your preferred software program (Winisd is one) to help identify which speakers will work best with that cabinet.
