$40 Magnum Bass - The start of my journey.

Hi all, I was reading another thread here about a Magnum bass (not the Ovation) that someone acquired having sat in a cupboard for 10 years and wanted to share my Magnum bass story.

I managed to pick up my first bass off Gumtree for $40. A Magnum with a P style pick up.
This one made in 02 possibly by looking at the serial number.

When I went to look at it, it had been in storage for a number of years, covered in dust and grime, the fret wire was green with gunk and was set up horribly. I took my ipad, irig and cable, plugged it in and found the jack was loose,
the volume pot wasnt working properly and the tone pot worked fine. When I got it home, I noodled with it that way for about a month before I decided it was time to clean it up.

I bought 2 Bourns 500k mini pots, for $13 and replced the pots, and by drawing diagrams and taking pictures, managed to replace the wiring, tightened the jack but left the original pick up.

I polished the frets with fine metal polish, cleaned and oiled the fret board, cleaned the bridge and attempted to give it a set up based on
a number of internet recommended methods and adjusted the truss rod/action height etc.

Set the tuning and intonation, and for $53 I have a very playable bass to begin my bass journey.

I play through my irig and amplitube on my ipad and sounds just fine to me with a nice selection of Fender, Ampeg and Orange amps to choose from.

One day I will possibly upgrade, but for now I am pretty happy with it.

Welcome to the forum!

For $53, it's pretty darn hard to fault, and I'd be willing to bet that most of us oldtimers have started with instruments which were vastly inferior to the one currently in your possession.

Play it in good health and enjoy!

Simply having a four saddle bridge was a huge advantage over my first bass.

At least you had a bridge. When I was coming up, we would have done anything for a bridge. And, we had to walk both to and from school uphill, in the snow.
Yeah, back in MY day, we played with a washtub, broomstick and rubber band! And we were grateful for it! :D

But seriously, you did well with that bass. My first one was an Ibanez EXB-404 that didn't cost much more than that one. Nice score. Now go play it!

It will get the job done. Most of us start on a bass like that.

You kidn? The first one I owned would have gotten picked in the playground by that bass. No name at all. 1/2" action. Had to bamg the crap out of it to get any sound.

@Jazza1281 Welcome to TalkBass!!!!

That's an awesome kick off bass.
