Hi, I don't know if i'm posting in the right board But i thought you guys could help me out.

I currently have a Hotone 5w thunder bass amp that I use with a pair of headphones to practice. I was looking on craigslist and found an Peavey 210 TVX 2x10" 350 watts at 4 ohms bass cabinet for a cheap price. I was wondering, will my bass amp provide enough power to even hear the cabinet or should I look into something else.

This guy used the same Hotone amp with an Taurus TS-210N cabinet rated at 450w at 4 ohms. At 3:13 he gives some camera audio, what do you guys think?

I have this head and run it through 2 Ampeg PF112’s with great results. Very surprising how much volume this little thing will put out.
Same... i run mine through a TC 2x10 and there is enough volume for individual practice.
Now, I did bring it along to rehearsal on day, just for poops a giggles, running it through my 1x15 Sunn cab. Sounded good, but not enough juice to rehearse with a four piece band.
I also used it as a pre into my Traynor YBA-1 and that sounded pretty cool as well through the 2x10.

However, it does take a certain amount of power to get some cabs ‘going’. In the case of an extremely low wattage head, there may certainly be certain speakers that will sound better with such low watt input source.

Welcome to T.B. where there are no stupid questions, just stupid answers. :)

The watt rating on cabs is the maximum you can (generally speaking) put into them without damaging them. Not any kind of minimum.

I've used my Hotone amp with a variety of cabs rated from 150w to 500w. It works just fine.

Ok, I am back.

Assuming your cab was say 97dB 1w1m sensitivity you are going to get 103dB at 1m. Is that loud enough for you?
Uhm,
in real practice (with a bass guitar) its not possible to get more than about 1/4 of rated amplifier power without receiving noticeable audible distortion from the amplifer. It depends on the amplifier design but, even the famous TE amps can't push more than about 1/4 without farting out.

I think its a good idea to predict something in the "conservative" range of 1/8..1/4.

Assuming the cab was of 97dB at 1Watt/1m sensitivity than a 5Watt amplifer would push about 97dB at most (IME rather less)

In real practice tube amps don't mind so much with the distorted maths. 97dB is still a pretty loud thing for a practice amp.
