95 Musicman problem

Hi
I have a problem with my Musicman bass. I bought it 2nd hand so don't know it's history.
The problem is this...
If I plug direct into my 500w stage combo it is clear as a bell, loads of headroom. If I add an effect pedal to the loop I get absolute silence, nada, nothing! If I add a Di box I get a signal again but it is slightly distorted.
I took it, as was booked, for a studio session as they wanted that beautiful MM sound. When I plugged in direct... Nothing, silence. Again, added a DI, clear as a bell.
If I plug direct into my 15w practice amp all I get is massive distortion that fades in and out and also have distortion but not as bad with my 50w Marshall amp. Again, if I add effect pedal without DI box I get absolute silence. The volume pot is on it's way out (that's been in the last few days) I had the jack repaired a few months ago but it had all the above problems before the jack went.
I contacted Musicman direct but they just directed me to a parts supplier and said it wasn't the Bass that was the problem (it so obviously is) which is great but everything's closed so can't order new circuit board, wiring etc.
Anyone out there got an idea what the problem is? It's like it's overloading my practice amps when I plug in direct. I'm at a loss as to what to do... Help!
