Researching for a new bag.
TIA for the answers.

Does the zipper go all the way around the volute or do you need to put the head in first?

What's the weight? I read light weight everywhere but not an actual number.

My other option is a soundwear but these look bulkier, especially for storage. Any insight or opinion is very welcome.

The zipper stops a few inches short of the top, which is great. That makes it much easier to pack while standing the bass up. The weight is probably around 5 pounds, but I've never cared to weigh it.

I can strongly recommend the Mooradian cases. They're well made, durable, easy to use, and built to last.

Yes, you put the peghead into the bag first. The zipper starts at the endpin and stops 5" from the top (on the outside). The other zipper runs from the opposite side of the endpin and stops in the middle of the body.

Weight varies depending on which model you buy. There's two grades, standard with 3/4" padding deluxe has 1" padding that weighs a bit more. My bathroom scale says my 3/4 size standard bag weighs 8 pounds.

PS customer service is great. I took one in for some restitching, they did all the work for free!

Brian, thanks for the detailed information and taking the time to weigh it.

What's the difference between ordering a US made bag from Boston, MA and ordering a US made bag from Louisville, KY? Mooradian bags have served me well but my next bag will be a Messina. Superior materials, superior fit, superior build quality.

For me it is that Mooradian has European dealers which means that I don't have to deal with customs. I have no problem buying direct from the US if the seller uses FedEx. They are customs brokers here in Spain and I know what to expect regarding extra charges or delays. Never a single problem buying basses and other stuff from Sadowsky or David Gage and getting it shipped through Fedex. I've had unexpected charges and delays with other companies or the postal service.

Ah yes....

Update: I ended up buying the Soundwear Performer and I'm very happy with it.
Winning points over the Mooradian:
- The zipper goes all the way around the peghead which makes easier to take the bass out with the bag laying on its side.
- Adjustable padded backpack straps with stowaway pocket: I use these wherever I walk with my bass and on this bag they are supercomfy. It also includes a shoulder strap like the Mooradian.
- Cheaper than the Mooradian (here in Europe)

In favour of Mooradian for those considering these bags:
- Although it's not as bulky or heavy as I thought it would be, The Soundwear (4.8 kg=10.5 lbs) is till a couple of pounds heavier than the standard Mooradian. I don't know the weight of the M. Deluxe.
- The soundwear bow pocket doesn't admit a hardshell bowcase. Its pocket is well padded but not as protective. It's also true that the hardshell would add weight to the M. final weight.

Why would you want that? You need more space, more time, and it puts more strain on your back. I absolutely hate cases that have to be put on horizontally.

Because many times stages are not big enough to use my DB stand so I'd rather extend the endpin and setup the mic and cables on the bass before taking it out of the bag, avoiding scratching/wearing the side of the plates (I'd like to find those leather side bumps that Gollihur used to sell). Once the bass is ready I just pull it up, the same way I'd do it if it were lying on the stage floor.

I find the Soundwear to be heavy and stiff. The advantage Fran mentions is rather a necessity when dealing with this bag. It is probably more protective, but it's like splitting the difference between a Moo and an actual trunk:)
