a primer for nitro paint

hi there everyone. I've heard that if you want to paint a bass or a guitar with nitro paint, you need to use a primer.
is it true? is it necessary for primer to be also nitro-based or an acrylic one is ok too? and if a nitro paint needs nitro primer and I can't find any in my town, can I use a nitro paint as a primer, just another colour? thanks for your answers.

The general practice for nitro is to spray a vinyl seal coat. Most companies that make nitro finishes also make a vinyl sealer. Having said that, you can also use a more generic sanding sealer or even a few thinned coats of nitro as the seal coat. Here is a link to the Mohawk vinyl sealer product that I've used.
