A silly question regarding tuner key orientation.

I'm looking into doing some hardware upgrades on my CIJ jaguar, thinking a heavier bridge, new pickups, and a hipshot bass extender and some ultralites. I'm about ready to pull the trigger but I'm not quite sure whether to order them "bass side" or "treble side". The description on the hipshot site reads: "Bass side = Left side of headstock on a right handed bass. Treble side = Right side of headstock on a right handed bass." is that in reference to the tuning key itself, or the gears? I've attached an image of my MIA Jaguars tuners, what orientation are those? bass side or treble side? I'm probably way over thinking this and making it harder than it has to be.

E string is bass side, G string is treble side of neck ... simpler that way ;)
Except that the G string (treble side) goes to a tuner on the bass side of a typical Fender=style headstock. Or the left side if it's a right-handed bass. Unless it has a reverse headstock, in which case it's on the right side. Unless it's a left-handed, reverse headstock, then it's on the left side. All of this assumes a typical 4-string. If it's a five-string you might have either one or two on one side and the rest on the other. Which might be reversed for a leftie or reverse headstock, in which case....... you can figure it out.

... yup, what he said ... ;)

... unless you are replying to the OP who lets us know the bass he is inquiring about ...

+1 on the ultralights (the gotoh res-o-lites will fit perfectly and help with the balance) and on better pickups, but the stock threaded rod bridge is excellent, it would be a shame to lose it. (you also don't get much balance benefit from a heavy bridge, the leverage isn't on your side back there.)

i'd also be worried that the hipshot bass x-tender would just erase all the balance benefit you've gained from the lighter keys; the jag bass body is really a bit too short for a bass, so you likely need all the weight removal up there you can get to keep the neck dive under control.

the difference is in the castings on most tuners but some like the Ultralites, can be dis-assembled and reversed. the gear train remains the same regardless.

Yeah, in your case; bass side. The gear is in the same place regardless; and yes, a lot of the open gear tuners can be switched around. Good thing, too; I ordered the wrong Schaller BM-4's for my Warmoth P-Bass build. But, my excuse is that I'm a lefty, and didn't have the sense to just get my Fender P-Bass out and look at it's tuners...
