Add a Cab?

My current rig is a GK MB800 into an 8Ω GK 115MBE-II cab. This rig sounds great and weighs very little.

I like having the 115 cab on the floor, but of course it's shooting sound at my feet all night and I can't always hear it (I'm usually 1 to 2 meters in front of it). I'm thinking about adding a 112 cab to sit on top of the 115 to get some sound a little closer to ear level. I like the 112 idea because a second 115 is probably overkill.

The GK NEO IV 1 x 12" 400W 8-ohm Bass Cabinet looks like a good choice, but I'm not sure I want to shell out US$800. Any other ideas for a 112 that might work? The MB800 head can handle a total load of 4Ω, so adding another 8Ω cab is OK.

You can lift your 115 cab as well
Extra clarity comes as a free bonus

Put the 15 on an amp stand, preferably one with a slight tilt back.

This is the correct answer. Just don't use something that is too tall or you lose sonic coupling. A second cab is great but it won't be cheap. You would be able to go considerably louder. However, it sounds like you just need a little more clarity from your sound and not a massive volume boost.

IMHO, elevate and/or tilt the cab.

If you need more volume or more lows, get a matching cab.

If you insist on mix and match, make sure the 12 and 15 get along before buying.

Usually adding a second cab gives you more volume, but if they are not designed to work together, they may not sound great. Just because the cabs are from the same company and product line is not necessarily a guarantee they were designed to work well together.

Good luck!

Thanks to all for your excellent advice!

This is your sole objection to adding a second, identical cab?

With all the gear I haul around I'm out of space in my car for another 115  I can probably squeeze in a 112.

Put the 15 on an amp stand, preferably one with a slight tilt back.

I'll try it at this weekend's gig. I have a stand that lifts the cab up about 18 inches (no tilt). Does that seem too high? I might lose some "beneficial" floor coupling if there is such a thing

If you need more volume or more lows, get a matching cab.

The MBE115-II isn't made anymore, but it sounds like there might be a used one at GC in Murrieta (wrong side of the country tho)

It looks like GC mis-labeled this. It's not an MBE115-II (cab), it's an MB115-II (combo)

Might be a good deal if you're looking for a combo though.
