Good Day Professor Patrick Neher.

I jump in here as a newbie.

My name is Christian Christensen and live in Sweden.
I have played the afro-american standard jazz on my electrical bass for 30 years, very private and would like to move to a double bass.

I need advice.
My very old retired father that was an excellent pianist and orchestra arranger has not the knowledge about string intruments, so I dont know who to ask.

I dont know anything about manufactorers, what to look for, nothing..

I do understand that these instruments are not cheap, but understand I need to pay something 1.000-2.000 euros for a secondhand good starter, and I need something to start with.

Of course I want a 4/4.

Humble I ask of advice.

Yours Sincerly
Christian Christensen

Christian,

In double basses, ¾ is considered the standard size. Very few people play a 4/4 bass in general. You will not find many 4/4 for sale, and that is why. In your price range, you will probably be looking at laminated (plywood) basses, and that's OK. Probably a large percentage of the players here are playing plywood, especially the non-symphony players. You should probably find a good luthier, that specializes in bass if possible, and see what they have in your price range. Buying used will get you more bass for your money, of course. There are some good Chinese made basses, and there are some terrible ones, so you need some guidance so you don't end up with a piece of junk. Not sure what brands are imported to Sweden, but in the US we have Shen, Christopher, Eastman, and a few others that seem to be pretty well respected among the players. You might find basses from Romania, Bulgaria, Czech, etc. over there that might be in your range, but I think you still need an expert's advice.
