After Lightweight, transparent speaker cabinets

So I’m looking to purchase a new head, most likely an Aguilar Tonehammer 500, because I really like the sound, and the reliable built like a tank construction too.

The importance of the head/cabinet relationship has been brought to my attention, and I realise that the cabinet I decide to pair will either make or break the head. Therefore it will mean a waste of money on the nice head and not getting the performance I’m after.

I’ve really thought about the fender rumble cabinets, as I have a combo and dig the sound, and they are really light, but I think it might not have the sound that I’m after. They sound good, but I don’t want the rumble colour, I want that warm, midrange punch colour of the Tonehammer, so I’d like a nice transparent cabinet that will compliment the head, not add a different colour to it. Hope that makes sense!

The Aguilar sl cabinets are pretty much that. They pair really perfectly with the TH heads, just complimenting it with transparency and clarity.

But, they aren’t cheap!

So, my question to all of you is, what are some cheaper alternatives, that won’t break my bank, or my back, that are transparent in colour. Most of all clear, with tight lows and not boomy, as my experience with rumble cabs have sometimes been. (Although speaker size might have more to do with it)

Im looking for 112, 115 or 210 cabs but really like 115s the most. I want to use a single cab, 8ohms, for the sake of convience, and don’t want to pair 2 or 3 cabs please!

Thanks!

Yes I am going to try all of these soon hopefully. There’s a store not far from me that stocks a big, big variety of bass gear.

I’ll also try out the markbass little mark 3 or tube head, which I’ve also been looking into a lot, and maybe a rumble head too. I’ll try them with different cabs. Who knows I might find something that suprises me.

But I’m very keen on the Aguilar Tonehammer.

Everyone digs somethin. I had the TH500 and SL112 for a couple weeks. Wasn’t my cup of tea AT ALL. I couldn’t control the bottom end in that it was too loose and woofy. I like that type of feel every now and then but that seemed to be more of a baked in feature. Quality gear but I needed somethin different.

When I hear lightweight and biggest bang for your buck, I immediately think Mesa Subway Ultra Light cabs, especially if you're gunning for a 115 -- it's phenomenal. If cash is an issue, I would definitely try and save for one -- even on the used market -- they are tough to beat. Guy I bought my D800+ from was a sworn Berg user who had a room full of that awesome stuff, but who plays out with his Subway gear now... not sure if his decision was purely tone based, or due to weight or a mix of both, but he got me to purchase the cab(s) unheard, other than a few awesome online demos... haven't been disappointed or looked back. That 115 can get that midrange growling, as can the 112 and the 210 diagonal... they move a lot of air and I can pick them up with one hand.

As far as the Aggy stuff, I haven't played their cabs, but if the Aggy is what you want, I always figure buy once and cry once... definitely save up for it and get/play what you love brother. Good luck!

I'm just one guy, but I hated my GK NEO cab and found it very distinctly voiced. I am an Aguilar player and don't feel that it comes anywhere near the voicing on the SL cabs.

If you have Schroeder cabs near you, have a look at them for lightweight. Used they definitely go for less than Aguilar and new I think they are a little cheaper.

Never heard of them, sorry. I don’t know Of any down here in the land of oz

I’ve got Mesa subways down here too.

They go for about the same price as the Aguilar SL cabs.

From my experience with ampeg (their combos, I’ve never tried their cabs) they seem pretty transparent and clear, but the ampeg svt cabinets, even though they are pretty reasonably priced, are really, really heavy!
