Aguilar DB 410 (speaker BLOWN)

Hello

I play with Aguilar for almost 10 years, DB 750+ 2X112, killer !
I recently bought an Ag DB 410 (4ohms) + DB 751...I should i have tried it loader when i tested it the first time because the 4 speakers were blown, still working but buzzing' and fartind when i played with a drumer (for exemple....).
So the guy who sold it to me ordered 4 new speakers from Aguilar's custom shop, 10" 4 OHMS. i also asked for the wiring schematic to be sure of it ! the deal was good to me with 4 new speakers !
I tested it in my studio, no problem, everything works....
Let's go on 10 days tour with a swing / blues band (means i do not played load), after the 4TH gig it started again and worth & worth ! it was like if i played with a fuzz or distortion pedal...really hard!
please if you have any suggestions please HELP ME !
i sent an Email to Aguilar's customer, i m still waiting'...
I do not understand why those speakers are blowning so quickly, it should works with DB 751+DB 410 ! NO ?

best regards from France

While the cabinet is rated for 700 watts, that's an electrical and thermal limit. The mechanical limits on the speakers will be reached at about 1/2 that power, or 350 watts. Going much past that is going to cause mechanical damage to the speaker eventually. It sounds like that's what you're hearing.

Remember, the volume control on the amp doesn't limit the power the amp can output, so even at a low setting, you can still briefly hit full power and probably will on every note attack.

You could actually run two of these cabs (either 4 or 8 ohm) to maximum clean/safe volume with the DB751.

EDIT: I just remembered that yours was the same rig I saw Freddie Washington playing with Steely Dan. I heard no issues there. Freddie's stage sound to my ear was loud and clear, but not super (metal, stoner/doom) loud, and I was sitting in the 20th row of a 5000 seat theater. I've no idea if he was using any limiting or compression. He may also have had an 8 ohm DB410 - which would get a nice safe 400 watts max from the head.

A Db751 is a 975 watt amp.

That's a 700 watt cab.

Isn't the rule of thumb to have 1.5x the speaker "wattage" compared to the amp. E.g. You'd want 1500 watts of cab to deal with that amp?

Not surprised at all that it's breaking.

When you replaced the drivers are you sure you did the wiring correctly? You can test the cabinet with a 9V battery place across your speaker cable. All the cones should move in the same direction at the same time. Let us know the result of this test. :)
good call.

If one happened to be wired backwards it would sound a bit off but EQ might get it back if not playing too loud. But the one playing backwards would be getting death from the other three. The other three wouldn't be too happy either.

The DB 751 can put out 975 watts at 2ohms.
From the manual: "Power Output: 975 watts @ 2 ohms, 750 watts @ 4 ohms, 400 watts @ 8 ohms"

http://www.aguilaramp.com/pdf/db751_manual_international.pdf

750 max watts at 4ohm shouldn't blow all the drivers.

You should hear some distortion/farting out than stops when you back off before the drivers blow.
As for the "1.5x" rule... best to use your ears. If your speakers sound distressed: distortion, farting out, etc - back off. Volume knob is your friend.

SO they are still making sound?
Take the grill off and lightly push on the cone of each driver.
If you hear a rubbing sound, it is done.

Tried a different amp with the cab?

750 max watts at 4ohm shouldn't blow all the drivers.

750 RMS watts of output into a cab rated @ 700 watts RMS will absolutely blow the drivers.

750 watts RMS, per my understanding, will generate transient peaks of up to about 1125 watts. Which is more than 1.5 times the thermal rating of the speakers.

So I'm unclear as to why you'd say that.

As-is the OP did hear distortion after the fact, or is hearing it now. It's odd he didn't before they failed, but, maybe he just missed it?

It's also possible he had an 4 ohm cab, but the amp was set at a fairly conservative master volume setting.

Good call though tbh.

I said it shouldn't blow all 4 drivers at once...not without some warning signs.
I didn't say it couldn't.

Obviously there are a lot of factors that have not been presented by the OP.

Also consider the voicing of the cabinet- it is voiced for big low mids (probably a bump around 100-300 Hz). If you are trying to force a lot of deep low end out of it at high volume that could be causing it stress as well. The Aguilar GS series has more low end.
