Hi,

So I just picked up this DB750 and it sounds great. The fan noise (IMHO) is another story. I can see this being no big deal when playing live with a band - and indeed that seems to be the consensus on here. Unfortunately, I'm usually playing in the living room semi-quietly these days.

Just out of curiosity I looked into replacing the fans. I haven't cracked the case open yet but I read in another thread here that this is the culprit:

3110KL-05W-B30-D00

31.8 CFM (0.890m³/min)
0.106 in H2O (26.4 Pa)
2700 RPM
28.0dB

I looked around on Mouser and Digi-Key and found some comparable fans; several of them are quieter (down to 17-ish dB) but of course with lower CFM and static pressure.

My question is - is it safe to replace these fans with something that's in the 23 CFM, 1850 RPM range? There are some Sanyo Denki fans with those specs rated for 20dB - like this guy. Seems like a pair of these would be substantially quieter, but will I cook the amp using these lower-volume fans?

Edit: I should add that I am definitely not going to ever be driving a 2 Ohm stack of speakers at arena volumes. Might be powering a modest 8 or 4 Ohm load at quiet suburban levels, though.

Thanks!

I totally agree. First thing I did was get an email out to Aguilar (no reply yet). I haven't had a chance to pop the cover off the take a look at the fans in person. I was just getting antsy so I figured I would ask the community.

I would not make any assumptions about what fan is in there.
Either open it up and work off the specific model or contact Aguilar for info and recommendations.

I would not change the fan without verifying from the manufacturer what's really needed.

Going from memory, I recall there being 2 fans in those amps, and that they may in fact be an odd voltage as well. There may be more than one version of the amp where the fans have changed as well.

There's a lot of dissipation happening in the output stage, I wouldn't recommend derating the cooling system from what the designer intended. It will not be an inexpensive repair if you guess wrong.

Sage advice, thank you as always Mr. Field.
