I saw another post about these amps from earlier this year but thought I’d shoot for a little more info. Right now I’ve gotta V4-B with 212AV. It’s a kickass setup. I’ve been looking to build up a smaller rig for the small to medium gigs. Originally I wasn’t thinking of selling the V4-B and going all Aguilar Tonehammer but lately I’ve seen some videos on em and saw one in action the other night at Brett Dennen show and I was blown away how good that amp sounded. It was either a TH500 or TH700 and a SL112 I think. If I was to switch over to a Tonehammer would I miss the peg? Does that little class D head move air like the peg does? When playing the peg I feel like I’ve got a 454 under the hood goin down the road at 35 mph ready to lay rubber and with all the power to do it. I kinda felt that feeling with my ole class A peavey Firebass II 700 and 410 I had. Just wondering if the class D Tonehammer’s provide that same burnin feeling?

The TH500 and 700 are beasts! I gig the 700 very often. I did pull my V4B out last night for a show and remembered why I keep this amp around. In my opinion no solid state amp will ever sound or feel like an ampeg all tuber... That’s not a bad thing.

I’d say hang on to the ampeg if you can only swing one amp. Add the TH down the road.

I have a vintage v4b and a th500. They're both very rad, but different. I don't think either could replace the other but they complement each other very nicely.

I feel like the th500 has more clean headroom, the v4b has a much nicer break up tho. I don't like solid state break up at all so the gain knob on the th500 is nice to have.

They both get pretty damn loud. I use them both depending on how I'm feeling and the th500 is the perfect backup amp to the v4b playing live.

Another nice thing is they're both fairly prevalent on the used market so they hold their value well. You can get a $500 th500 on the talkbass classifieds all day long and sell it right back for $450-$500 no prob. The vintage v4bs aren't quite as prevalent but they seem to be holding steady right around $800-$1200 second hand.

Man I think I that’s what I’m going to do. I’d miss that peg tone. What’s the difference between the TH500 and TH700 other than the watts?

They are very similar, I had zero complaints with my 500 but I always said if a higher wattage TH came out I'd jump on it... so I did.

The 700 is not noticeably louder but it does seem to have more booty, I dig it.
