So I'm day dreaming rather than working, and was thinking that what my arsenal lacks at the moment is a P/J, although the more I think about it, I'm wondering if there might be some bridge pickup that would be more interesting with a J? I'm thinking like Nordstrand Big Blade or big split or something. In general, I like the sound of P/J basses, but not really J bridge pickups on their own (I essentially use my J either both on, or favoring the neck) Looking to build up a really punchy and aggressive bass for hard rock/punk. Of course, this is a need not a want :)

I think you answered your own question. If a bridge J isn't something that interests you, then just about anything else will be more interesting. ;)

Just from my own perspective, I appreciate uniqueness. Everybody (figuratively) has a PJ, so why not do something different? I think a bass would be pretty darn eye-catching it if had a Big Blade or Big Split in place of the J.

Maybe I just needed a push...

I keep scouting warmoth for a proper cheap body, and not coming up with quite what I need. Apparently, rear routed P bodies never show up in the showcase.

I was just at the Warmoth site, seeing if their pickup route options include Big Blade/Big Splits. (They do -- either EMG 35 or Bartolini BC.) If you're seriously thinking about doing this, then I'd recommend ordering the body you want and having it custom built. It's not that much more expensive than the showcase, and you get exactly what you want.

Yeah, you're probably right. I just keep hoping some freakishly cheap one were to come up. But frankly, warmoth doesn't seem to have as much freakishly cheap stuff as they used to. I was just planning to finish the thing in matte black krylon or something anyway...

In that case, you can get a poplar body routed the way you want for $175. If you waited and waited and they eventually did put up a rear routed P body in the showcase, the cheapest you'd get it for is about $155. I have seen bodies as low as $135, but those were front routed jazz bodies.

Yeah, and the stuff in the screamin deals section is often insanely heavy. They have a 6lb 9 oz P in there right now. I'm not totally wedded to a rear rout, but the standard P control cavity route doesn't seem to leave much room if you wanted to do a preamp. Or maybe I'm wrong. I mean, I am pondering a 3 dollar rattle can finish on a 200 dollar custom body, I can't be that bright

my P/J is kinda different ... a 5ver , 51 style ...

Nord Split neck pup .... was going to put a Big Split in the bridge , but it was a 2 month wait , so i got a Split Bart ... works great , sounds good ... stronger bridge , with a touch of Tele type P pup ... or full on P pup , with some bridge .. versatile ..!

and it seems a bit more useful/versatile than my other J ... w/dual coil Barts ...

i've had other P/J basses where the bridge pup was just to weak or noisey ... i like these Big Splits ..!!

still had the Big Single in there ... full but still typical single coil hum ..!

Cool beans. Is that active or passive?

I am having a 5 string made by Hammersmith as we speak. It will feature a Duncan Antiquity II P bass pickup at the neck and a Duncan NYC 5 at the bridge. All passive with master volume, master tone, 3 way pickup selector and a series/single/parallel switch for the NYC.

Look it up. I think the combination will be great. Expecting delivery sometime next month. I'll keep you posted.
