Alternative to compression?

Hello everybody, I'm Todd. I am new here.

I have been playing guitar for around 22 years. I tried bass around that same time and didn't like it at all. I started getting bass gear and playing around 4 years ago. I mainly got the stuff just to have and be able to write when needed.

For reference, I am playing a 4 string in drop C. Signal chain is a follows:

Ibanez Sr3000>TC Electronics Spectra Compressor pedal>Darkglass Microtubes B3K pedal>Ampeg PF500 w/ PF1x15.

The strings that I'm using are
D'Addario NYXL55110 Nickel Wound Bass Guitar Strings 55-110 Heavy

I recently joined a band as their bassist and while I am overall happy with my tone, I am curious about ways to get a more pronounced low end.

I would like the low C string to cut through a little more. The other 3 strings sound great. I can get the sound that I'm looking for on the low string, but then the high string is a bit shrill.

It could probably use a new set of strings. I've probably spent around 15-20 hours on these strings over the past 6 months.

I plan on looking into better compressors and getting new strings to start. Any advice or tips are welcomed!

Ok, I haven't thought about that. I'm pretty savvy with guitar stuff, but bass is a whole different beast. What pedal(s) are you using for hpf/lpf?
This what I use.. right in front of my Khan VDTI - no amp!
