Anyone using aluminum (or more correctly aluminium :)) neck plates on a Fender style bass?

There's a few makers on ebay. Is this strong enough? Some say made of aircraft aluminium. (Looking at shaving an ounce or 2 off my bass and that chrome neck plate has to be worth a few!)

Should be fine. There's no reason to OVER tighten the neck screws. Tight is tight. Otherwise you're just deforming the wood in the threads or directly under the plate (or the finish) be it steel, aluminum or even titanium for that matter. The pocket and heel wood isn't gonna move so you're just crushing wood for no good reason.

I have a neck plate I made out of aluminum diamond plate that has been fine on a guitar for a couple of years.

You might check to make sure the plate is chromed, anodized or somehow finished. The aluminum won't rust but it can corrode, especially under sweaty hands or arms.
