I just came across this video recently, where Ian Allison presents some amazing one-off builds from Spector (Woodstock, New York). In a recent post from @Dr. Cheese, he had asked folks to post songs/artists that were played with a boutique bass (great conversation) and there were some Spector references and then questions about whether or not they were still boutique... well love 'em or hate 'em, I think there is a lot to appreciate in this video that shows some amazing artistry and craftsmanship of each of these unique instruments.

Oh I thought it would have this guy on it:

Beautiful bass anyway!

I, for one, love ‘em…the finishes on some of the Woodstock Collection basses are incredible. Northern Lights, I mean…c’mon! I’ve owned one US model and 4 Euros…and I have to say…the Euros are REALLY good in comparison. Maybe not quite as fancy as some of the US models, but at ~1/2 the cost…

I can understand why someone would choose a US model, just impressed with how good the Euros are…

I haven't watched the clips yet, but what's the "Woodstock " conn connection.
I thought maybe they made a limited run from pieces of the rickety stage from Yasgers farm.
I know they did that with the floorboards of the old Ryman Auditorium.
Are they made in Woodstock?
Yep, the Spector factory is in Woodstock. There’s a couple of good factory tour videos out there too.

They're all pretty sick in the their own ways, but if I was in the market for a new bass and could afford it, I love the sound/look of the one with the buckeye wings. DANG. (I love me some coffee table basses. ;))

But man, that's one chonky price tag.

5sg.

Some of them are really sweet.

Several are really odd. I know of at least 2-3 from the original Woodstock Collection (the second video) that landed in GCs used section within 6 months of that video’s release. They’re still there….

I think one of the downsides of getting too “out” with US Spectors, is their absurdly high price. There’s not a good reason to buy a “quirky” US Spector unless you already own at least one standard one, with Maple, EMGs and a Haz. Which really cuts down on the true audience. Since most folks don’t have the ability to own several 6k+ (retail) basses.

It seems like any of the USA Spectors, whether it’s a unique build like one of these or standard, are in that $5-7k range.

They are gorgeous and the “video” sounds really nice. The 4’s are cool, but I’m 5’s all the way. Fit and finish is top notch— or should be. For me, while I am not saying it couldn’t ever happen again, I try to not listen with my eyes at this point. I’ve usually regretted when I have in the past.

To be fair. They’re all a unique build. They don’t have a production line and everything is either a special run or built to a dealer spec.

My point is more that the “Woodstock Collection” Spectors usually stray pretty far from their standard formula. Which makes them pretty niche. Since most folks would just grab a more standard spec Spector as their first US build.
