Ampeg B15N Cab: Single to Double Baffle Conversion?

Hey guys

Do any of you Ampeg pros know if there's an easy way to convert my '66 Ampeg B15N single baffle cab into a double baffle cab without any extensive mods to the original design? Is it as simple as adding a baffle and changing the mounting screws?

Thanks!
Turbo

No, there is no easy way to properly make that mod without extensive mods to the cabinet. The biggest issue is installing a new, fixed speaker baffle in the cabinet. Due to its size it will not fit in the top opening or the front opening. There would also be some lesser issues due to the face frame being wider on the single baffle cabinet versus the double baffle. In my opinion the original face frame would need to be removed to allow the installation of the new baffle, and then be replaced by a narrower new one.

Your single baffle cab has significant value as is, and much less when converted to a 'frankenbaffle'. If you really want a double baffle cab, sell the single baffle cab and have a double baffle cab made. Then consider installing a JBL D140! Kidding, just use the driver you prefer.

I hear the D140 is a killer speaker. If I had one I'd install it but for now I'm happy with my Delta 15A.

The Delta 15a is a great speaker that sounds just like the old Ampeg CTS speakers. I agree with the crowd that says to leave it. If you want a double baffle, I'd advise just looking for an orphaned cab or getting a repro from Mark at Vintage Blue, who's Ampeg family anyway.

Yup, that's what I'll do! Anyone know the main sonic differences between a single and double baffle cab?
Wish I did, but all I can tell you is I know people who are quite happy with either, and I've run across a few who prefer the single baffle. Me, I've only ever heard the double and the Thiele cab.
