The stock hard plastic casters that come on spkr cabs just don't seem to withstand rigorous load in/out; I've replaced all 4 casters on 2 Ampeg SVT-410HE's @least once w/ hardware store replacements. Even new wheels aren't that mobile on rough sufaces.
Then I came across a great deal on a used Ampeg PR-410HLF. I've wanted to try one out forever and I really dug the sound, but obviously the weight is a real issue, and this one didn't come w/ casters(obviously broken and abandoned long ago), so out came the 2wheel dolly.
Scrolling thru amazon, I found these heavy duty replacement casters for office chairs; they are literally rollerblade wheels on a swivel mount. Hard rubber wheels that are rated @650lbs each and garanteed not to scratch hardwood floors or break easily like plastic casters tend to. Since office chairs have 5 wheels you'll even have a spare. So I bought them, not thinking about checking shaft size(insert snicker here), they are a hair(hee hee) smaller than the stock metal inserts that come on the cab. So back to amazon to order the correct 7/16" inserts and they fit the existing mouting holes no problem. I installed the replacement casters, and now the thing moves like a damn skateboard, and thats not a big exaggeration bcs even on a slight incline, it WILL roll.
Each wheel is rated @650 lbs apiece, I'm confident they'll outlast those stock plastic casters and you have a spare. I even put them on my pair of 410HE's although they aren't doing full time duty anymore, I still have to lift the PR410 by myself, so I'm sure I'll need them @ some point. Maybe a gig rig and a practice rig. I've had these for awhile now and it just occured to me it was prob time to share this solution w our bass community. Links to my purchases follow but I have seen some more inexpensive sets online. Peace Ya'll ------->
