So - there I was, a newly minted musician playing my guitar in a band of weirdoes. I was 16, these guys were 20-22. The bassist drops out because the bandleader only had him play roots (I sympathise completely), we get a new guy 10 years older who can't play bass - he borrows the drummer's cheap SG bass.
Then I meet the singer, this 6'8 stringbean, literally towering over my then tiny frame. His cat scratched his forehead before the set, he spent the entire song hunched over the too short microphone, mumbling his words and scratching is scabby forehead.
He forgets the lyrics half way through, I have to "save" the song with my playing, and he and the drummer (brothers) get into a huge fight afterwards and we get kicked out from the competition (it was a battle of the bands) because the singer kept insulting the little kid doing electronic music.
Not all first gigs go as planned, kids!
