Another school shooting

Try to remember how many people don't get involved in mass shootings. I really think when media hypes these stories too much it gives the perpetrator the "stardom" they were looking for and encourages the next sick person to try something similar.
I'm not trying to underplay the tragedy and loss, but I don't want to do anything that would encourage repeat behavior. ie, giving attention to the murderer's facebook page.

The FBI was alerted, but apparently they were unable to find the guy based on a comment he made on a YouTube video.
What the heck? Really?

He is in custoday. The picked him up some time last night because they took him to a hospital. I saw video of him this morning being escorted to jail still in his hospital gown.

It’s as though they’re trendy right now.

Something plainly isn’t right- probably a lot of things, but I doubt we could touch on the bigger half of them without getting political, and I fear it’s probably more complicated than anything we could tease out otherwise.

Still, it would be nice, if, failing anything else, people could just try to be kind to each other. It wouldn’t erase the problem, as we’ve still got ideological friction and mental illness left to tackle, but it would be a start.

But then, so easily said, and yet here we are.

I'm going to venture a guess that modern society allows us to be more isolated than ever, and that for some unstable people that is very very dangerous.
The internet has not made for diversity but has done the opposite, making polarized specialty niches with largely homogenized views. and allowing a platform for nearly anyone. A person in psychosis can really go far without being checked in this environment.
A little community goes a long way. We like to forget about the shut-in weirdo in apt 5 and go about our business, but it's better if we bring him soup on occasion to let him know he still exists as part of a bigger whole.
Anyone can go off the rails under the right circumstances. It's not something we generally like to admit. The question is who will be there to let you know when you are losing perspective and show you how to get back on track.

I agree. I understand that I the problem is very complex. I will leave that to people who are smarter than me. I do know that helping a struggling kid, or getting to know my neighbors could make a difference. Lots of other things we can do as well like not feeding trolls here elsewhere. Don't give them the negative recognition they crave.

Yup, had an ice cream social for my whole block, it didn't take much and the neighbors loved it. Working to create community really makes a difference.

I was referring to the comment he made online in September of 2017 that the FBI investigated. He told people then he would be a professional school shooter.

It gets tricky quickly... What is an edgy joke, and what is a cry for help? "Professional" implies getting paid for a specialty, so without extra information it looks a lot like dark sarcasm before you see that it was probably something in between sarcasm and a cry for help.

I prefer freedom of speech over a police/nanny state any day, regardless of the dangers and added responsibilities that might involve. I'd be more interested in what his close friends(if any) or family(if any) had to say about his behavior prior to this.

They actually had his name. That is the odd part here.

Frankly, I think that a simple solution is as follows:

Only allow a place to be a "gun free zone" if you put up the same barriers to entry you put up at a courthouse or airport. Otherwise, the only people there that actually have guns are the ones that want to kill people.

A good dose of perspective:
There are over 100,000 public schools in the US with an average of attendance of 500-600 students in each one.

A single death is a tragedy, but some are reacting as though we are losing the entire student body of ten schools a week to this sort of thing.

Personally, I believe the primary purpose of public schools these days is as day care centers anyway. They are not needed in the age of online homeshcool curriculum and things like Khanacademy.org. Well, except as day care centers because nowadays both mom and dad have to work outside the home to make ends meet.
