Any light weight tuners available for 70's fenders?

Looks like the Gotoh resolites fit pre cbs but not post cbs fender necks. Are there any direct replacements that dont require redrilling screw holes?

I'm looking for lighter than that. I have a set of Hipshot ultralites that I could put on but I'd prefer to keep the look and not drill if possible

You could try the Gotoh GB640 @66 grams you are down near the ultralite's weight. I think the dimensions are off just enough to be upsetting.

I'd probably have to drill holes for those and they are close enough that it might get messy. I get 33mm across the top and 36mm top to bottom for mine. Not sure if the tuner peg would be in the right place.

If it's original and you don't want to drill holes then just leave it. I think lightweight tuners are way over-rated. I actually replaced the light Hipshot tuners on my US L2K with heavy vintage long stem Schallers. Why, because I love how they look and I've never liked how newer tuners are tapered. If it were my bass I'd just leave it alone.

If it's neck dive you're looking to cure, use a wide leather strap that grabs your shoulder when you let go of the neck. I've been using them for years on Fender basses with the CBS style tuners, and the bass stays put when I let go of it. I'm not a very big guy either, and I don't ever get a sore shoulder doing things this way.

Wilkinson Vintage bass tuners are drop in replacements for 70's Fenders and they are pretty light. They're not expensive at all and are a very good tuner. I've had them on a bunch of basses and never a complaint.

I do remember reading that the Gotoh Res-O-Lites can be taken apart and put on the 70's style back plate.

Do you mean his existing Fender back plates; or something else?

Sorry, should have specified. I believe the parts are interchangeable with the Gotoh 70's style back plates.

Just wondered if anyone has knowledge of this working? I'd be interested in this if so.

I saw the original comment above and decided to try this. I had a set of Gotoh GBR640 resolite (60s baseplate) and Gotoh FB30 (early 70s style baseplate).

I can confirm that this does not work. While it looks like some of the parts may be compatible they're not. The gearing and mounting for the keys is different so is not compatible. It looked briefly like the posts would be interchangeable and would result in an 80g saving over the stock FB30 for a set of 4; however, they're very slightly different so trying to fit them together has a lot of play and won't work.
