I'm looking around for a new bass within my price range, and stumbled upon the mtd kingston z4. I've heard most mtd basses have asymmetrical necks and I wanted to know how they play and feel. Do you notice a big difference in your left hand or is it barely noticeable? Is an asymmetrical neck better in general for left hand ergonomics?

My main bass is a Tobias Growler, also with the asymmetric neck. For me it is still one of the most comfortable necks I've played. P basses are intolerable, some Jazz basses have been nice, the skinny Ibanez necks are also okay, but none really compare.

Admittedly my case is special, as I'm without half my left thumb and the tips of my first two fingers. But I've let others play it and they all comment positively on the asymmetric profile.

I have two instruments with asymmetrical necks (ASN) necks. They feel quite comfy, to me. Can't really explain the difference between ASN and plain old necks (PON) as there really is not a different feel to them IME; they just feel right, you know what I mean.

I know this is old... but if you never picked up the Z4 - I'll say I highly recommend it. Mine is beautiful, sounds great, plays great. I have been addicted to asymmetrical necks since my first main bass was an MTD Beast (passive, circa 2000, Czech Republic hand built) - as MTD found manufacturing quality and could consolidate they did so and dropped the Korea/Czech for the current approach via China and then varying builds by the quality component level. The Z4 certainly not a USA MTD, but it is REALLY close for the price difference - and I've heard some say a pick-up upgrade really can make it sing... but I really like the stock and the wood veneers of them so in no hurry to test that myself.
