Disclaimer: I didn’t take before pics. I am sorry. :bag:

I picked up this Conrad bass (acoustic b15 included) today from FB Market place for $160.
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a bass be in both this good and poor of condition at the same time. The old(er) guy I bought it off of said he’s had it since college, so I assume he’s the original owner. Came with its bridge cover, thumb rest, and the original chipboard case even! (All unpictured, but they’re there along w/ the truss rod cover)

The body, finish, parts, etc are all in pretty decent shape…but the neck had a wicked bow in it. Fretting an F on the E string was nearly an F# due to the height of the string. The ancient bridge cables it was wearing didn’t help. Doesn’t look like it’s had a string change, let alone a set up, in all those years. I’m working on straightening it out now.

The truss rod, luckily, still works and wasn’t maxed out. However, this neck is BEEFY, and I fear it’s pretty set in its ways. I took out all of the slack in the truss rod, and have tightened it as far as I’m comfortable pushing it w/ the resistance that I’m getting. The neck still has a very slight amount of relief (unstrung) though. Going to let it sit a few days and hopefully it will relax/adjust slowly with time.

Either way, it’s a fun project for very little money. I was mostly after the amp, as I need a small practice amp, so figured this is a good deal for the two items.

Wish me luck with this rehab!

Anybody have an idea what the body wood is? I was assuming it was going to be plywood because of the dark finish around the edges, but surprisingly it isn’t!

I love the 3TS on this. It’s almost more like a Ric fire glow rather than the fender 3TS.

Some people say the wood is Japanese mahogany, some say agathis.

If you visit here

vintage japanese bass guitar - Google Search

you will see lots of images of your bass as well as of a few of its cousins. "Genetic markers" are the five screw neck plate, the truss rod cover, the pickup(s), the bridge cover. You will see both P and Jag shaped bodies, single or double pickups, long or short scale, redburst, sunburst, or solid finishes.

Cool bass...I have a few Japanese guitars and I like their unique take on guitar shapes.

The playability of my UniVox ES335 is very good too.

Plus is that a burn on the head stock from placing a cigarette using the Eddie Van Halen method?

This was a practice long before Eddie van Halen. One reason I quit smoking (circa 1971) was because I did not want scorch marks on my bass.

Don’t see it would be held to the back of the headstock though? My guess is it was leaned against a radiator at some point.

I had a 1980-ish washburn vulture that needed more relief; it had neck removed, the truss completely loosened, and a stack of encyclopedias placed on it overnight (or maybe a couple days for good measure). It was right as rain after that!
