BassCliff w/KRB at Sawdust Festival, 8/5/17

Hello friends and neighbors,

Yesterday me and the KRB also played The Sawdust Art Festival in Laguna Beach on the same stage as Mr. @Holdsg did earlier in the week. It was a pretty cushy gig if you didn't count the traffic, the crowds, and the inconvenient load in/out. But I'm not complaining.

My day started as I drove down the main drag of my hometown to make my way to the freeway about 8:30am.

It was a good commute into the OC until I got to the Laguna Canyon where the road narrows.

But I made it to the venue on time. This is what it looks like out front. Our loading zone was to the left of the main entrance.

We went in through this side door by all of the kitchens in the food court.

Then we wheeled our gear down this narrow hallway into to food court.

On our way through the food court we passed the saloon stage where we played last year. A duo was setting up.

And we kept on going, dragging our carts through the thick sawdust.

Until we got to the stairs. It wasn't too bad. Really.

It was lovely at the upper deck. We had a waterfall, a brook, and lovely art pieces.

The boss lady is already busy writing out checks for everyone.

Hal gets set up. Jack is running sound for us today.

The rest of the lads get set up. We actually had room to spread out a little.

I brought my small rig. It was plenty.

Jack at the mixer. He also brought his Dean Hardtail bass because his girls are singing a few songs during our sets.

It looks like we are just about ready to start.

Kelly and Jack's girls get up to sing a couple. The crowd just ate them up.

On the breaks we go downstairs and check out the acoustic duo. Nate on the DB is a great player. The guitar player did most of the singing and strummed the cowboy chords and Nate did all the soloing.

I'll be right back in the next post. Thanks for looking!

Hi!

The VW bus right inside the entrance was repainted. It was the official selfie spot.

I think this clock was made for our guitar player.

(The clock says "Art Is Timeless".) :p

It's that time in the show where Daniel tells us about a fiddle player named Johnny.

We had great crowds all day. It wasn't a large area but it was SRO for every set.

Our dear friend Heather, from the Ranch, stopped by on her way to work to say "Hi" and give us a listen.

The lads relax on a bench during a break.

On our breaks a magician would put on a show. His slight-of-hand was pretty good but his schtick was even more entertaining.

Kelly puts on the show. She had lots of family and friends here today.

We were done at 4pm and had to get out of Dodge quickly. There was another band coming on right after us. Daniel says, "Excuse me, coming through!"

My next engagement will be at the OC Fair playing on The Hangar stage with True Willie, where Mr. @Holdsg just performed with Who's Next last week. They're a tough act to follow but I'll do my best.

I hope everyone's weekend is funtabulous! Please share your frivolity. :)

Nice lookin' place to play! Sure beats your average northeastern rock dive that's for sure.

Weird (to me) seeing all that constantly sunny and good weather though. One guaranteed way to make it rain, or make it unbearably hot and humid around where I am, is to hold an outdoor festival. Nice to see that isn't so everywhere else too.

Thx for the gig reports. Always a pleasure seeing a fellow TBer out there doing it.:)

Well, HEY-HEY!! Outrageously excellent, once again!! Magnificent looking place, and glad it was so well attended. I had to laugh, because in that pic of Art and the guys taking a break, he looked like he was working up the courage to make a move on those two women sitting next to him!! Thanks for posting, Cliff - looking forward to the next one!

Excellent report, Cliff.

Of the 3 art events which are all adjacent to one another and run simultaneously, Sawdust has always been my favorite. The temperature is usually fantastic, and it's always fun to see the different types of art (and occasionally buy something.) That upper stage sits in a beautiful setting. I'm certain you guys sounded great!

Ol' dbase is going to give you a verbal flogging for not including any food shots. It was great when Wahoo's Fish Taco was one of the food vendors years ago, but there are still good choices to be had with the current vendors.

We're looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday with TW!

A perfect day and a beautiful venue. Made the not-so-easy load in a bit easier to deal with I'm sure

Kelly's girls are growing so fast. They really do engage the crowd. So cute AND they can sing!

Kelly was looking particularly striking! She's one person who has a permanent exemption from the no shorts on stage rule ;)

From the late 60s through the 80s we would go to the Sawdust Festival every year. In the beginning it was a small, alternative hippie type event with only a couple of permanent structures. Over the years it became more popular, and crowded. I haven't been there in probably 25 years now. The place sure has changed from the old days but they look line very good changes.

As usual, thanks for taking us along with you :)

Agreed, Grant. We started going in the early 80's, so my experience only goes back a mere 36-37 years. I remember how grass-roots it was back then, and can only imagine how it must have been in the 60's & 70's.

Needless to say, the subject matter of some of the art certainly became *less racy and more family friendly through the years as well. ;)

Edit: With the exception of what's lurking in the Patti's People ornaments cabinet...:woot:

It was a nice way to spend a day during our UCI years and a few years after that when we still lived in Irvine. Like you, haven't been to it in several years. And we were at St Catherine's in Laguna for a wedding a week ago on Saturday. We always seem to be in too much of a hurry...

Hi guys!

Thank for looking in on my little career.

Looking good Cliff!

Thank you very much. Oh, you mean Kelly. :p

I love these posts!
It gives me a window into the lives of such fancy high-class people and places I could only fantasize about!
Thanks for sharing!

I'd say the attendees were a bit ritzy but we're just a bunch of working stiffs. And one of us is only the bass player.

You're welcome. In this part of the country it rarely rains outside of our winter "rainy season". We only have to put up with the earthquakes, and fires, and our "dry" heat.

always an entertaining/refreshing post(s) from cliff. thanks for sharing these! and i agree 40Hz = cliff's weather looks so inviting! though i prefer the midwest summers to the winters, it has it's own perils. ha!

thanks, again cliff!

You're welcome. The weather today was quite bearable until the sun got directly overhead and we lost our shade. But the breeze helped.

I thought for sure they would go into a "hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil" pose. :D

I'm sure Mr. @dbase will scold me soon. See you at the OC Fair Hangar. Thanks!

There were a few pictures on display of the festival in its earlier days, very interesting. It seems a lot more commercial these days but still very charming and the array of different art is amazing.

Sometimes you need to stop and smell the sawdust. ;)

Art is Timeless..........very clever, love it

I knew I had to get that picture as soon as I saw that clock.

I swear, the country club and attraction load-ins are the worst.

Don't get me started. At least this stage area had plenty of power outlets for our gear. Somebody was thinking ahead.

These posts are great! What a gorgeous gig location too. One of these day's I'll have to do a "Cliff-style" photo sequence at one of my dive bar gigs. :roflmao:

Hey, I've posted about my dive bar gigs too. Please feel free to share yours! I'd love to see them. Thanks!

In the early days there was a main entrance with a sign but no real wall around the place. You could just walk in just about anywhere. Very bohemian, while the Festival of Arts/Pageant of the Masters just down the road was the straight Laguna Beach art crowd. Didn't see many counter-culture people there.

From the looks of your photos they did a really nice job creating a cool artistic environment.

Then and now.

That's a really nice stage and space to play in, which helps make up for the load-in. Good idea to bring the small rig!

Man @BassCliff , you get these reports up very quickly, how do you do it? It takes me forever. Also, I seem to always forget to take some of the key pics in the sequence. I forgot the food shots again from my gig on the 5th, but I will be posting a report soon.

No food shots again .. I'm keeping count ;)
