Hi-I decided I would get back to playing bass which I haven't done for decades. I did find a nice Fender Jazz Bass at a pawn shop but I passed on a very nice Peavey Cirrus 4. Since then I've looked into this guitar and it reads like a real gem, with through body neck and great action and tiger eye maple, amazing looks. The only odd part is the tuners are set at aproximately a 45 degree angle while every example of the 4 string bass I find online the tuners are set at 90 degrees. The 5 string basses have the tuners set at the 45 degree angle. I don't see any serial numbers to help identify it.

Has anyone come across a 4 string Peavey Cirrus bass with tuners set at this strange angle? The guitar seems way too nice to be some kind of knockoff. Possibly an error at the factory? How can I determine where it was made?

Thank you Bongo! I noticed the ebay photo shows the serial number and Handcrafted in Indonesia on the back of the head. The one I have my eye on doesn't show this. Aren't the American models labeled inside the electronics cavity? I forget where I read that or if it's even accurate. Not easy to track down these Peaveys.

Mine also has the bold black edges as with the new current edition as well as the gold hardware. The visible difference between mine and the current model is the through body neck does not show through in the front, although it does in the back. What makes one a bxp vs. the American made?

Visually, the easiest way to spot a BXP is the bridge. The USA models have a huge high mass bridge and never used the little individual 'mono bridges'. Internally the electronics are different as well as the woods and build quality of course.

I found this BXP that sold here last year, and indeed has the tuners installed at somewhat of an angle:

Also seems the older Korean made ones did not have any writing on the back of the headstock.

That looks exactly like it!. Including the lack of "made in..." on the back of the head. The tuners do look a bit off so maybe that was an early Korean made thing. I tried out the old fender jazz bass with bent neck and hardware issues and then was stunned when I picked up the peavey and it's neck was perfect. The whole thing seemed perfect. When I plugged them in I was taken by the fender sound and I just liked it better , plus they accepted less money. Thankfully the neck adjustment was easy. But that peavey is nice.
