Best gauge strings for drop A tuning

If you take your preferred gauge for your E-string multiply that by 1.5 that will be a good place to start.
Yes this will give you an A with the same tension as the E, if by 'drop A' you mean AEADGC.
Or if you don't mind the lowest string being a little looser a .145 is the minimum for good tone at A (30 pounds tension, extra light).

1. find a string tension calculator - D'Addario has a great one called String Tension Pro .com
2. plug in the values you're currently using
3. make note of the tensions it calculates
4. change the tuning as per what you want to change
5. now adjust the calculator to get similar tension to what you've been using
6. take note of the string diameter you had to change to for the correct tension

i just ordered strings to tune my 5 string to A standard. i ordered a .145 for the low, on a 35.5" scale. i can report back when installed.

hey man, how did it go ? thinking to install a 0.145 TSL on my Ibanez SRFF805 on low A.

A - 0.145
E - 0.100
A - 0.75
D - 0.55
G - 0.42

Around 37-38 lbs on tension calculators.

Should be enough with a 0.135 according to your experience ?

Thanks and best regards !

It worked and sounded great with the DR DDT strings I used. Nice tension.
