Broken Eden WT-800

Okay, I'm pretty sure I posted about this when it happened but that was forever ago so...

Flashback to 2010, my friend asked to borrow my WT-800 for an open mic he was hosting. I explained how to set it up, since I wouldn't be there, and he managed to blow it up. He used a single bass cab with two speaker cable slots and plugged both sides of the Eden in to it. Supposedly it worked for a minute, then shut down. There might have been magic smoke, at this point I can't remember. I figured out that it was blowing fuses and that's as far as I got. At the time I was too broke / in a crunch to fix it but now I'm at a point where I'm either going to fix it or sell it for whatever I can get. I've moved a number of times and I don't want to lug that thing around if I'm not able to use it.

A friend actually got the schematics so the amp is currently in a local shop for a diagnostic run - the point of this thread is to try to get any extra info that might help them. Obviously you aren't looking at the amp so it's guesswork but any advice or resources would be greatly appreciated.

IMHO, a competent tech will not appreciate or need the type of inputs you suggest. My guess is it will cost more to fix than you can sell it for broken.

Yeah, I'm expecting it to be more expensive to fix then it would be to buy one. And I wanted to ask here just to inform myself, I'm not going to try and tell the tech what TB has to say as if a forum is more informed.

My main amp is just fine and at this point I'd rather spend $500+ on a new, micro head versus another WT-800 that weighs 1,000 lbs. But if the tech comes back and says I could fix it for 2-300 then I could either flip it or have an absurdly powerful backup.

Plugging what is 2 power amp channels on that amp into a single load is likely to cause substantial and costly damage. Beware of spending too much on an estimate relative to the value of the amp.

I specified with the shop that I only want them to spend enough time to give a cursory examination with a small fee - it was actually their suggestion when I explained what happened.

I guess I've always known it would most likely be too expensive to fix but I was just trying to stay positive... oh well. Amp ruined, lesson learned. Hopefully. At least I didn't break it.

Enjoy your new Eden doorstop/paper weight.

Not meant to be mean just with this type of damage it is a reality.

Well since you have authorized the bench fee, keep your fingers crossed and think positive.

OP, just my $0.02, but it's been nine years. WT800 sounds good but is a tank and there are newer options out there. Treat yourself to something new maybe ?

FWIW my WT800 and 2x12 XLT both blew up last year, total repair bill for both was just under $300.00. While they were down I bit the bullet and and bought a D800+ and 2x12 Fearless cab.

Not sure what Im going to do with the Eden stuff.

He did what he could at the time, found me a loaner and then gave me enough money to buy my Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 which has been my main amp since. At the time we didn't really have a local shop that would even look at it.

I'm not in the market for a new amp, more doing housecleaning to finally deal with this amp that's been broken for years. I do get what you're saying though... even if the cost to repair isn't very high, why spend that money on a twenty year old, super heavy amp when I could instead save towards something new whether that's an amp, cab, bass, bill, etc. I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

About 7 years ago, I saw a band and the bass player was using Eden. His bass sounded incredible. So I decided to switch to Eden. I ordered a used WT800 from Guitar Center and it was dead on arrival. I returned it and they sent me another one which was also DOA. I ordered 2 others from different online sellers. They didn't work either. That ended my interest in Eden. I have always purchased used gear and never had a problem with any of them until I tried Eden. I went back to Ampeg and have been very happy.

You have good taste.... my #1 & #2 are my Shuttle 6.2 & 9.2. I plan on them lasting forever.

I'm pretty much in the same situation with my WT-800. I haven't exactly browsed around looking for repair suggestions or quotes but my guess is that it will be more costly to repair it than it is worth now. I thought mine just had a tube go out so I replaced them but that didn't seem to fix it... oh well, doorstop/paper weight it is then. :(

Sometimes you can get some money out of these amps by selling as "broken" on eBay.

Here's a few reasons. 1. sentimental value, 2. it's a very good sounding and versatile amp.

Only you can decide if it's worth repairing. If the idea is to repair and flip, I think you are probably better of recycling than repairing. Here's why: It's unknown if the amp is economically repairable and repairs don't always hold. So basically I would only repair if the personal value of the amp exceeds the street value.

Seeing 1 year or 2 year death reports these days lol
Seems like your 26 pounder was solid 12 years already and wanting more

I don't think a real shop would need help.
Assume Toasted output devices and whatever those took with it.

If tech needs help. Take it somewhere else.

Read post 12 and 14 above. You missed those posts about Eden's led sled deaths.
I have also had to deal with Eden led sled early death with a WT800 and WT550.
Also search around for post made in the early 2,000's Eden had a ridiculous amount of led sled deaths.

My Genz-Benz, no death. My Genzler, nope.

As of a few months ago Mr. Genzler reported that he still has not had one of his Genzler Magellan 800 or 350 amps back for repair.
Check through the Genzler Club and you will see that he cared enough to make sure the pots, jacks, cooling and other aspects of his amps make it very reliable.

Do not lump all class D together just because a few are junk, also stop conveniently having amnesia when led sled amps show up with issues. There have been GK RB's and Hartke's LH units recently talked about dead soon after purchase. Them are not class D.

Eden WT800 two months.
Eden WT 550 almost one year.
Each one is less than your 1-2 year average in your statistics. :(
That is barely getting the pendulum swinging in my clock.
