Cab Sim for Fender Tone App, Rumble Studio 40

When you use the Fender tone app to select an amp are you supposed to have the cabinet simulator selected to "none" when you are playing through the amp? All the presets have a cab sim already selected so I figured it is supposed to but a friend of mine swears that since you are playing through a cab you are supposed to have the cab sim selected as "none".

I understand where he is coming from, when you are recording direct using just a preamp you need to have a cab IR or else it sounds horrible but if you are playing through a cab you don't need an IR, having a IR while playing through a cab is redundant. Does the Rumble studio 40 work differently? Are you supposed to have the cab sim selected/can use different cab sims while playing through the actual amp. Thanks.

Wha...?:roflmao: That's like saying you don't need an amp sim because you're already playing through an amp. It's a modeling system, for cryin' out loud! Of course you should use different cab sims through the combo speaker(s) for different tones and see how that component affects the sound. The whole idea of modeling is to get different sounds, right? Why limit yourself to the sound of the physical cab when you have all those cab sims to play with? What other parts of this amazing gear does he think you should ignore? :D

By the way, what does using the app have to do with what parts of the system to use, or not? Like, if you don't use the app, and just use the manual controls, then is it OK with him to use cab sims through the amp?

Scott, assuming you are the wise owner of the Rumble Studio 40, and not your friend, I advise you, as a 3-year Studio owner myself, to: ...

A. Go to the Fender Rumble Club here on TalkBass and introduce yourself and your amp, with photos if you can, and join up, for free! There are lotsa friendly Rumblers there.

2. Then, go to The Club's dedicated Rumble LT25, Studio 40 & Stage 800 sub-thread to discuss, question and share about these marvelous modern bass modeling amps! There are several very experienced and quite knowledgeable modeling Rumblers there.

Thank you for your reply, seriously! This “friend” had me doubting my sanity. I think there was some ego at play here where he thought he knew better than me because he thinks he’s some expert at recording. Lol. He told me before I bought my rumble I was wasting my money because I can just play through my interface using my presonus DAW and a bass sim plug in. Yeah maybe that can work but doubt that would sound good for anything but recording.

Again thank you for the reply and I will check out the links you sent.
