I personally love the way carbon fiber looks and I tried searching searching for a bass body made out of it. The only one I saw was an old thread where someone claimed they'd made one but I haven't found any others. There are loads of guitars made with it so maybe I'm just missing something?

I'm this attaching a picture to show what I mean

I used to have a Status Stealth I 6 string that was a carbon fibre monocoque. The Status basses with graphite bodies are actually hollow, with the carbon fibre cloth being laid up over a wooden frame before being heat treated. In the end, the instrument is sealed from end to end. It's very cool, and makes for a very light instrument.

mine is 6.2 pounds ... when you play standing up it's like its not even there

Didn’t Phil Lesh play a Modulus bass with a carbon fiber body in 1985? It appears on the Grateful Dead 12-31-85 TV broadcast, and in the So Far DVD. Looks like the body has that “weave” appearance like the back of the neck.

Any insight into this, Geoff Gould?

I’ve seen some mandolins made from CF but they are hollow body. Very impervious to high humidity and temps.

I think CF would be cost prohibitive to make a solid body P bass.

I suspect the OP's bass is not a carbon fiber body, but a vinyl wrap.

The way to make a CF body would be vacuum bagging over a foam core, then dissolve the core with gasoline and flush it out. I’d bury a piece of wood or an aluminum rail down the center to mount everything on. For info on the process look up people building carbon wings for R/C gliders. It’s a very doable DIY home project, your largest single expense will be a vacuum pump.

Go for a lightweight ash or alder body that has a carbon paint scheme/dip -- seems like the best of both worlds for you!
