Check Out This Bass Player...In Some Quality Literature!

I Just started a new novel titled I Cheerfully Refuse by Leif Enger (who I discovered is quite the prestigious, best-selling writer). The setting is along the U.S. shore of Lake Superior, in the future, with some very quirky future realities: 16 families control all the main businesses, reading is becoming a lost art (the current president is proud to be illiterate – his motto is “A Man Unspoilt”), and people seem to be escaping to Canada (hey, maybe this isn’t set in the future?).

And on page 4, we learn the main character is a bass player!

His being a bass player is not a main subplot, as far as I can tell, just one facet of his character.

While this is cool in itself, what I found most reassuring is that not only are there basses being used in the future, but this guy is still playing gigs at MULTIPLE BARS! He has two in the first 50 pages! There’s hope!

Here’s that first mention – I hope I’m not infringing on the author’s writing, and only share it so some of you go out and buy his book. It’s a good read, and I've only started it:

The future? There’s potential for it to be late breaking news. Which is probably the point.
