OK.... Total new guy that loves it here. Used the invaluable TB search features and all I am supposed to do.... I see post after post poking a wee bit of fun at the tortoise (faux tort) pick guards... Why come?..... See I been wanting a sunburst P bass since I was first smitten with the bass bug middle of last century. Even want the upside down thumb rest hicky that nobody ever knew why it was there.... And dare I say.... A tort pick guard... Was always my dream and I am about to buy but now feel somewhat "inadequate" in my lifetime love choice.... Clue me in please.... Why the lack of love for tort????

It's just a TB inside joke. There are dozens of these jokes, that a small group of people here just won't let die. Best (blank) for metal is another. Get the tort. You won't sound any better, but if that's the look you're going for, who cares if it's "cool".

There is, in every aspect of life, those who defy the giant because he is the giant. There is no rationale to it. It is just a bias with no basis. Remember when everyone hated IBM? Now it is Microsoft. And there are the Apple haters. And for basses, it starts with anything Fender. From there it gets as inane as to whether Precision or Jazz, maple or rosewood fretboard, tort or anything else for pickguards. It is mere human psychology. I play my Fenders proudly. Two are Precisions and both have tort guards. My Jazz does not.

No fan of sunburst paint jobs or fake turtle shell guards, but when shopping for a used bass, my only concern is function so i've had a few sunburst paint jobs and a few tort guards. I in fact happen to currently be in possession of a pristine example of a Fender Deluxe Active Jazz bass with a gorgeous 3 tone burst paint job and a tort guard, the real fake tort BTW, none of that printed fake stuff for me. It is however for sale or trade as i'm no fan of burst paint jobs and fake turtle shell guards.

Well... I know I am the odd guy out. I like fat girls and don't get the point of video games either..... But this resonates back to the teenage bass player in my gut.... Heck, I probably won't even play the thing. Throw all the wife's china out of the cabinet and put it behind glass just to marvel at.

Oh no brother, if you want it, this is America (patriotic tune in the background), live your dream and play it with pride because at the end of the day it's what we do here, exactly what we want, and the critics, cynics, and curmudgeons can urinate up a rope if they don't like it. My own personal sacrilege is an affinity for gaudy machined bridges with all manner of locking devices on them, quick change string options, and even a kitchen sink if such a bridge existed. I've been poo-pooed, chided, and even had my sanity and intelligence called into question over my little predilection, but like water on a ducks back, all the pressure to conform just rolls right off as i install my latest 59 buick bumper of a bridge.

Welcome to TalkBass!

Another Carolina boy! Woohoo!

K, now that we got that out of the way...

Sure, go tort. People around here (myself included) are goofballs. You'll learn which parts to take seriously and which to let bounce off soon enough. Until then, fake it til you make it!
