Double Bass Coming from Europe and looking for private lessons in NYC

Hello everyone,

First post here. I came from a suggestion on Reddit. To sum up, I'm going in a couple of months to NYC and I would love to take the chance to have a private lesson with a NYC bassist. Sometimes big names aren't the better teachers so I ask for any kind of reference or contact.

I have a bachelor degree in jazz and modern music but I'm not a pro musician. I love tradition if it gives any hint.

Thanks everyone in advance.

The best thing to do I believe is check out all the university close where you'll be in NYC and check the teacher they have. Check if they teach regularly, see if they have masterclass online and see if you could be interested in that. Then usually it's easy to find the university e-mail.

Not sure why you are going to NYC but you could also check if there is some musical camp happening during that time maybe you could find more choice.

Good luck!

Thanks a lot everyone.

I didn't know I could edit my main post so I'll add more things:
- I will be for 10 days. Holliday trips of course. I'm going to Smalls, village Vanguard and every possible place. I'm travelling with my wife and my toddler so it'll be better to schedule the lesson before getting there.
-I know one lesson won't be a lifetime thing but it will make me feel I'm learning from someone I will never reach from my place.
-I ve checked the teachers at the main places in order to contact them. For exemple I saw Gerald Cannon and Ben Wolfe teach at Juilliard but I don't find any video or masterclass to see their teaching.

Thanks again everyone, really appreciate it.

OK, this is good to know for giving advice. Most important to keep in mind is that New York is a pretty exhausting place to be, especially with a toddler. Talking to guys on the gigs you go to hear can be just as beneficial as a lesson, and it takes up less of your energy. :)

How long do you plan on being here? Generally one lesson's not going to do very much unless there's one particular thing you're working on that you'd like to address/correct/develop/whatever. Maybe give some thought to that, as people's recommendations would be more helpful with that info.
I've had a lot of single lessons that were impactful. One important thing is to ask them specific questions about what they do that you want to learn. Otherwise they will just pick at your left hand for the whole lesson!

i've had four bass teachers that i studied with for years each. all were great. two were through the colleges i attended at the time..

but i agree that some of the most valuable stuff i got, came from a single lesson with someone i wanted to meet/pick their brain.

but, that of course applies specifically to reasonably established players who go to a particular person for a particular reason.

as far as NYC people, cole davis would be my top pick. just a wonderful player, and he seems to be a good teacher.

I had some really great lessons with John Loerkhe in upper Manhattan. He’s a really good player with a lot of teaching experience. He’s done quite a bit of work accompanying singers and has a really good sense of arranging in vocal trios.
If you’re interested, I can message you his contact information.
