Compression placement with wireless

Does it matter? I know that just about everyone recommends if you have compression in your signal chain in most cases it should be the first effect in the chain. Question is in regards to wireless. Should the compression be place before the wireless unit? Between the wireless and the amp? Dose it even matter?

Think of the wireless as a buffer that passes the signal without changing it. Basically the signal coming from the wireless should have the same tone and dynamic range as the bass. The degree to which this is true depends on the quality of the wireless. The signal level coming from the wireless may be a bit different than from your bass. So it may be necessary to adjust the compressor to compensate.

Where the compressor should be inserted depends on your tone goals and how you use compression. I have a compressor near the beginning of my pedal board and another towards the end.

If the intent of the wireless is to allow you to roam unencumbered by an instrument cable: In order to place the compressor before the wireless, you would need to wear the compressor along with your belt pack.

Assuming wireless technology has SOME influence on your signal as many claim it does (and I believe it to a degree), a compressor in front of the wireless may degrade it before it goes anywhere. You should be able to determine that with your configuration tests.

I use a 5.4kHz wireless primarily to avoid interference with other devices - doubt it prevents any signal degradation, per se. Reading reviews on the upper end wireless kits will inform you if the whole idea of wireless is worth it for you unless you go for the top dollar solutions.
