Compressor comparison

Hi,
I'm after a good cost-effective compressor pedal. I mainly play hard rock and grunge era stuff, mostly pizzicato and pick, but getting more into slap lately.

I'm between the boss Bc-1x, and the Ashdown Dual Band Bass compressor.
I understand the Boss is probably more versatile, but more expensive. Ashdown is significantly cheaper, and looks pretty darn awesome (LOL).

There are no good music stores near me where I could test them (which I know would be the best approach). Any of you guys have experience with those, and is Boss worth the extra bucks? Any other brands suggestions?

Luke67, welcome to talkbass! I would check the sites Blue Swede has kindly provided, however, a lot of discussion on compressors on this site. If I recall, ovnilab reviews had also a ranking on best compressor for your buck.

I'm seeing quality gear for low-dough in the classifieds all the time. I think you can do better than the Boss and Ashdown without breaking the bank. Here's one that's a best buy:

Diamond Bass Comp EQ
Empress Bass Compressor

For bass the MXR and Empress compressors are great.
