So I have at my disposal, the cort arona 5 and the Yamaha BB 5Gs. A few videos online clearly highlight the versatility of these basses. But i'm hoping for some inputs to help select the best of the two assuming that I dont the chance to play them. (Intermediate player looking for a first 5 string). They retail for about $275.

THANK YOU!

Open to offers from members for cheap, but reliable basses.

Own a Cort Arona 4, the tone is different than any Cort Artisan and Cort GB bass. Even some GB model have same pickup configuration, the Arona 's Delano desonic pickup have better tone to my ear.
In passive mode, tone is smooth and a bit warmth without drop volume like my previous Cort B5 plus.
In Active mode, tone become growl and punchy, I believe this is the essential for slapping.
Been try Flatwound and pressure wound on it, for me , this bass love bright sounding string.

Hope help.

The only let down of the Cort arona is the 2 band EQ. it would have been great had they offered 3 band eq.

Absolutely yes.

I dont think the 2 band EQ is bad anyway, when in active mode, the Bass and treble are boost with some amount even both knob set in the middle , that why i said this preamp is great for slap.
Dialing down some amount with both bass and treble knob, she will bring out the MID and Tone is a tap cleaner than passive mode.

I've got BBG5S. One of the best sounding bass guitars I have. Every time we were on the gig, the guys in the band:
"Don't play that, Where is that blue one (Yamaha)? That's the better than any Fender!"
Very nice guitar, holding tune forever. I adjusted neck maybe 10 years ago and I was just playing this weekend and checking stuff. Still like arrow! I cannot give more compliments to it. At least, I love it.

Im looking for a modern sounding bass. I already own a P-bass. Something like a yamaha/cort/ibanez BTB. (wider string spacing and a chunky neck)

For modern sounding 5 string bass with wider string space , just forget the Cort. Own a Cort B5 plus , string spacing is 16.5mm.
I recall that both 35 scale Yamaha RBX775 and Ibanez BTB705DX is 19mm string spacing.
