I've started recording bass tracks for a friend's songs. He lives in a different state, so he sends me a rough track and I record a bass part.

This is the most recent example. I think the bass tone is good and sits well but perhaps could be better, and I'd appreciate input from experienced folk (especially you who do a lot of recording/engineering).

I'm recording bass->Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 -> Focusrite Scarlett Solo -> Reaper (thanks @

whatizitman). No effects.
I have nothing to do with the current (working) mix or arrangement, so critique in those areas is less helpful.
Comments on tone and bass parts are most welcome.

I'm uploading the whole track here, and the isolated bass part below it.

Am I hearing some distortion? Add some compression and smooth out your playing. Check your levels and find out where the distortion is originating from. It's a little busy but that's my own personal critique. Take it with a grain of salt.

Thank you, Funkfather. I'm betting that the distortion is from the gain on the Shuttle - I like some of that live, but I'll try recording some comparison tracks with the gain brought down.
I agree that it's a but busy - I was riffing on the "Silly" theme, but I probably tend toward busy and need to stay aware of that.
