Daisy chain question

Hello TBers,

I'm running an EA wizzy 10 4ohm
and a EA wizzy Mline 4ohm into a
AI Focus series 2.

Should I plug them both into the amp or should I plug one into the amp and then connect the second cab to the first cab? And if so, does it matter which cab is first in the chain?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

The band leader in one of my bands burned up two power amps by running them at 2 ohms when they were designed for a 4 ohm load. When I joined the band he asked to borrow a power amp. I watched as he connected everything at a 2 ohm load. I told him this was wrong and showed him how to do it correctly. No problems ever since. Personally , I would never run any 4 ohm amp at 2 ohms.

No you aren't. You're running your signal from the amp into the cabs.

Ok, fair enough IZ405. I hope you feel better about yourself, every little bit helps.

Understanding signal flow is key to understanding trouble shooting, and communicating technical information. Daisy-chaining is the same as running both cabinets off the back of the amp electrically. The connectors are wired in parallel so no matter how you physically configure it, you've got a parallel connection. Two 4 ohm loads in parallel is 2 ohms, the amp drives the speakers (because speakers are passive, they only do what the amp tells them to do). If the amp is rated at a 4 ohm minimum, I wouldn't run both cabinets at the same time. The amp will try, but the current goes up. That means more electrons are flowing, creating heat from the friction. Heat is the primary killer of electronic components, so it's not a good idea to run the amp at 2 ohms.

If you come seeking help and assistance, it seems counterproductive to reply in a seemingly disparaging manner when help is offered.

There seems to have been a few threads lately on running 4Ω minimum amplifiers with 2Ω loads. The answer is always the same: it will work; until it doesn’t. I have no idea who “Rick” is at AI but unless he actually designed the amplifier in question he doesn’t know what he is talking about. Seriously if the amp was safe with a 2Ω load don’t you think a company would see that as a benefit and mark the amp as such?

In my mind running a 4Ω minimum amplifier at 2Ω is foolish.

Hi Paul, thanks for your post. Rick did design the amp and he saw it last month when he overhauled it. I also know enough about signal flow to know that the amp powers the speakers and not the other way around ;) my original question was in regards to PHYSICALLY plugging in the cable and what was the difference between chaining them together and "running" them both plugged into the amp.
